Hi Guys,

My Clapton strat takes 10's i would like to to go 9's is it ok to do that and will i have to intonate etc? or is that only if the gauge is heavier? I kinda know that its fine but would like a couple of yes's from you guys.

Thanks doodz

I tend to switch between 9's and 10's on one of my Strats. The intonation is usually okay either way on mine. Sometimes a slight adjustment to the truss rod is necessary especially at certain times of the year.

If you change gauges, either way up or down, you will have to adjust the trem spring tension at the "spring claw screws." If you don't, your bridge will sit at a different height and your intonation and string height will be "off."

When I change gauge, I adjust those screws until the bridge floats at the "right" height (for me) and the intonation is "in." It's a trial and error thing, though. Adjust, retune, check intonation, repeat.

Any time I change string gauge I check the entire setup.
