Hello everyone,

Sorry this is long and complicated question. I have noticed that most of the people in this forum are straight shooters and are usually not "stuck-up" when providing answers and guidance to people with questions. I know there are other guitar companies out there, trying to stay in Fender family. I've played on B.C. Rich, it was cool...bought it a few years ago, used it on trade-in on my HWY 1. Played on Jackson but too expensive to buy. Gibson...too expensive; but love to play on them. Not impressed with Ibanez. I have an ESP LTD...I keep it for leads with a lot of tremelo action...Needs different pups.

Let me start off saying that we do not have a lot on income in the house. It took me a very long time to get my set up.

My daughter likes Avenge Sevenfold, Metallica, and Hindered. (mostly what she hears on the local Alternative-Rock station here in Houston)

She wants to get the sounds from her guitar like these bands get. I know that equipment is just as important as the type of guitar when it comes to sound. I play on 2 guitars, see below. She does not like the ESP LTD sound (do not blame her for that, she knows quality sound) SHe is impressed with the sounds I get from my HWY 1, but I feel that that this guitar is a little too much for her at this time (not to mention it took me a long time to save for mine) and I tried to tell her that my equipment helps me sound the way I do, plus I have a little experience. I started playing on a Squire HMIII back in the 80's and loved that guitar until my son accidently broke it (he was a lot younger and didn't mean to). I went without playing for almost 5 years and then I got back into playing a couple years ago, then I purchaced my Fender HWY 1 Stratocater a few months ago and have not really put it down except to work and sleep.

We looked at several Fender models and a couple Squire models. I feel like she needs a HSS configuration for the music she wants to play; however, Squire does not have one (at least that I've been able to find at several stores I've been to). I tried looking on line to see if Squire makes one, but it appears that they do not. I did notice that they do make one that has Seymore Duncun designed pups. Out of the Squires in the store, that one sounded the best. But for the price of that axe, I could spend a little more for a Fender MIM HSS. Not to mention that fact that Squire's are not what I rememer them to be. I was not that impressed with the Squire they had. (maybe I've been spoiled with the HWY 1)

Should I buy her a Fender Standard HSS (costs more), or should I just buy her the cheapie Squire with the Duncun pups to learn on? As far as equipment, I am willing to let her use my equipment, just not my Fender and she does not like the ESP. I do not want to buy her a "dud" guitar she won't like; but I also cannot afford to spend a lot of money for something that she might not even touch when she finds out how much work goes into learning to play guitar. I can only afford $100-$400. Of course the larger the price, the longer she waits. This also means that I will have to wait even longer for my next guitar purchace, I've been eyeballing a Fender Stratocaster HSS with Floyd Rose Tremelo. Oh well, it would be worth it if she's happy. Not to mention it would be a good bonding tool for us.

Help!

Pick up a lightly used MIM std HSS for $250 that is already nicely set up. Can't go wrong.

i just got a gibson melody maker...

$384 brand new...american made gibson...set neck...nitrocellulose laquer finish and one special single coil pickup...its pretty badass!!

i know its not a fender and therefore probably shouldnt be mentioned in this board but i enjoy it soo much and i think its a great "student" guitar.

plus if she doesnt like it you can play the hell out of it...

on a side note...craigslist.com has plenty of quality used fenders!
i am not a fan of the hss config myself...(i play a 62 reissue) but to each his/her own.

i say go for the mim though...find a clean used one for $300 or under...

if you give her an instrument she'll want to play it...if you give her a toy...she will lose interest eventually

...just my two cents...good luck!

I know you said you had a $400 limit. But the MIM standard Strat HSS is only a touch more. Might be worth waiting just a tad longer, than later on regretting....."I should of..." Just a thought...

I have a MIM HSS Standard Strat, and I love the sounds that the bridge humbucker can put out. I also love the ease and feel of the fingerboard. Very easy, comfortable guitar to play.

I agree with Syeklops! The MIM is a fine guitar and within your price range. Good luck to you and your daughter!! :)

A NEW MIM Strat should be a touch under or right at $400. Excellent guitar for a beginner.

And as mentioned take a look at www.craigslist.org for used too.

I have nothing against the Melody Maker, had one many moons ago, but depending on his daughters age it might not be the best choice. The melody maker is a very fragile beast. It breaks easy. The headstock can crack or break off with very little effort.
Just a point to consider

what is the young metal goddess's level of playing.
For a beginer axe point her towards a jackson dinky js30 $329 is a steal, i own one for metal stuff and its great, i paid £250 ($500) for mine and its took serious abuse of near townsend proportions.

for anything up to a semipro level of playing jacksons japanese range doesnt dissapoint although you pay more for it. Their certainly on a par with fender american standard guitars. I had a RR3 that was a beauty. Their a fender owned company and their quality control is superb, i've never heard of any problems with em that didnt boil down to preferences.

If she's realy into metal dont get her a strat, she will find it limiting despite pickup configuration. On the other hand, she will outgrow metal one day so get ready to part with yours when it happens :D .

Daughters are a conundrum, you lose and win in every situation as their dad. I've got three, i gave up making decisions 10 years ago.

I would extend this and say "excellent guitar for anybody". The MIM Fenders are ridiculously good considering how much they cost.

Thanks to all the responses so far. I was already leaning towards the MIM Fender Strat for her. I was also thinking about her changing music styles as well.

Tried Craigs list for my area...a lot of people were saying they were selling Fender Stratocasters and the pics were Starcasters or Squires. There were a few Fender Stratocasters...people must have thought that a used guitar should bring more money than new.

I might go look at pawn shops once I have $250 - $300 saved. I have to be careful though I don't want a "Frankenstein". The last time I went Someone put a Fenter replacement neck on a Piece of Crap guitar. That is why I am trying to buy new from Licensed Dealer.

I would get the Fender HSS /w the floyd rose for my son and for me. Otherwise, go for the Squire. By the way, go for the Hello Kitty one....

She's not the "Hello Kitty" type (asked her, she laughed at me). I want the one with the Floyd Rose myself...Money constraints and I can only afford one or the other. B/S if she wants to put one on later, I'll let her pay for that puppy. Again, not sure how she is going to take to playing guitar. I may have myself another guitar in a year or so if she decides not to be too serious. Thanks though.

Why not look into the Squier Jagmaster?

Image

It's a short-scale (24") guitar with dual humbuckers for about $250. Sounds like a good fit for a girl into the music you described. Do a search on YouTube, and you'll discover this little instrument can really wail. Plus--and not to slam my beloved Stratocaster--it doesn't look like everybody else's guitar.

I find they are cool guitars. I played one at the guitar centre through a Marshall JCM 2000 with a Boss MatalCore pedal and this little girl was staring at me like "what are you doing killing Hello Kitty?"! :P
