Er, thanks guys.

Perhaps I explained myself badly, but the screw is now gone and the hole has just been filled with a dowel, carved for the purpose. It is waiting for a maple veneer cap and refinishing, prior to refitting the tuners. I'll post a pic of the finished job in a few days when the lacquer is on. Thanks for all helpful suggestions.

Just to bring this up to date while anyone interested can remember the beginning of the story.

I filled the hole with a dowel carved for the purpose. Then capped with a circle of maple veneer - this pic shows the veneer in place, scraped smooth but not finished yet; also, three rejected circles of veneer:

Very unlikely in this situation to find a section of veneer that matches the grain of the timber, so better to pick a featureless piece and then paint it to match. Here it is colored and lacquered:

I'll give that lacquer plenty of time to harden before fine sanding and buffing.

So. As you can see, not an ideal repair. Sometimes that veneer cap just disappears into the surrounding wood with an almost invisible join. This time however there is a distinct circle visible up close. Though you can't see it from three feet away... and it's going to get covered by the tuners anyway. Really just an exercise in hyper-neurosis: I award myself five-out-of-ten for the job.

End of story. Thanks for all your help, guys - C

Ceri ,I think you have done a wonderful job and will be undetectable when you finish! Great work and I know it will be perfect when you get done. I wish I had the patience and skill to work on my guitar like that!

I would give you at least a 9 so far and a 10 when finished! 8)

Thanks F, that's very nice of you. Though I'm afraid 9/10 would have been getting that screw stump out without need of further repair. 10/10 would have been not breaking it in the first place!

Still, I'm not exactly new to screws: you'll have to take my word that it was the screw that broke, not me that broke it... :?

Cheers, F - C

5/10 hmmph :?

you can see its a repair, you can also see its been carried out in a meticulous and thoughtfull way, which atleast shows the guitar has been looked after. Throughout the life of the guitar more repairs are going to happen to various parts. Its inevitable.

9/10s screw end removal, ok.
8/10s an invisible cap.
7.5/10 I'd say thats a more accurate score. 10/10 on the paintjob for the cap. 8-9/10 for the cut of the cap. When it's laquered it could be less apparent. Over time it could dissapear.
Dont be so hard on yourself mate. That friend of mine who worked for John Diggins guitars, repaired new fenders before sale to the public. You should hear some of the horror stories of those late cbs strats.

I'd like to hear those stories!

The annoying thing is I've done this same job better myself before. Sometimes that veneer join just disappears into the original wood, sometimes there's a line, like this one. I don't get enough practice at it to be able to make sure it's a good one every time.

Anyway, soon as the lacquer is hardened and buffed I'm going to drill another screw hole in it and mount the tuners over the top - so it hardly matters really!

But it passes the time...

Cheers - C

Stories of such things as,
Headstocks doweled back on at the factory, and arriving with the dowel still proud of the neck.
Machineheads not in-line.
Necks hanging off.
Those are the worst i remember him telling me about, the rest was just the usual things. Trems, finishes, pickups and other electronics

Ah now, that I can do! I'm ten out of ten at that one!

And thanks again for the earlier suggestion. I bought a piece of metal tubing like you said and have it standing by: itching to try out that idea.

Bedtime on this bit of the planet. G'night all - C

I say that looks pretty good.

I hope you get those tuners on without any more headaches.

I think the job looked excellent. I hope that if I have a similar issue, the repair person I use is as talented as you. I personally would not attempt that kind of repair on my own. You have the patients of a saint.
