An interesting topic just hit me: how do you guys like your finishes? Personally, I can't stand even the smallest scratch on my guitar. I always make sure it's polished every day. But hey, that's just me. I wanna here from you, though. How do you like your guitar: crisp and clean, or dented and dirty?

I would never intentionally beat my guitar up, but I see scratches and wear as a thing of nature. Personally, I can't wait till my maple fretboard is worn down to the wood, finish coming off the edges of the contours. It's like having a personality. I guess I do love brand spanking new guitars with shiny finish and gleaming metals, but I also don't mind a used guitar with some personality. Plus, it's a lot easier to not care.

Same here, I'm careful with my guitars, I polish them, but I'm not going to be angry with myself for scratching or dinging them. Wear is a sign of use; it lets other people know that you've done some serious playing on your guitar.

Don't get me wrong, guys. I don't kill myself over scratches - my polish can usually take them out - it's just that I'd rather not have too many of them.

Hmm .... How it sounds and plays is always most important to me. But I'd rather have that nice sound on a good-looking instrument. I don't mind the little scratches and dings that accumulate on a regularly played older instrument. If it was mint-mint-mint, I might not want to play it lest I mar something.

But I realize that the instrument is mostly wood, and as such needs to be treated and conditioned periodically lest a host of expensive-to-fix problems develop. This is particularly true of unfinished wood areas, such as a rosewood fretboard, for instance.

If I'm not playing it or resting it on a stand, I wipe it down and put it in a closed case to lessen problems with sudden big swings in temperature and humidity.

I kinda like em used looking. But I wouldn't intentionally abuse a relatively expensive guitar. Now, my Squiers are another matter.

the only way i like scratches is if put them on my guitar... i'm not going to pay more for a "relic" guitar with almost fake looking dents and such on them, i want my own story behind them

I've been playing the same old Strat for the last 17 years
i kept it really clean for many of those years but it is really starting to relic now. The paint finaly wore thru where you put your forarm and the neck has wore thru the finish in many places showing bare wood and the thing has yellowed over the years.

But the funny thing is that now the guitar has such a cool vibe that i like it better that ever before.

i alway get props for my guitar and tone
so isn't that what its all about....

While the relic guitars look pretty cool I would rather do mine naturally over a period of years.
I take care of my guitars, but if it gets a mark, scratch, or dent I don't panic about it. It gives the guitar character.

which is the reason i've been thinking about buying a highway1. the idea that my guitar will grow old with me over the next 50 years is a very neat one to me. some day my grandkids could have 'grampy's old strat' one day or something... and it would look like, sound like, and at that point be an old vintage strat. well worn, and full of character and stories.

i would never damage my guitar intentionaly. however i would like my guitar to look beat up in time. im only 14 so none of mine are beat up yet..... however i do own a 1952 harmony stratotone that my grandpa picked up at a yard sale for $1.50 and its so old looking it has original gold paint on it and its peeling off and the wood is exposed. the neck is like a baseball bat but it sounds amazing. and ive been told it is an expensive and rare guitar.
