I want one of my pickguards and some knobs yellowed. Im toying with the idea of soaking them in tea for a month or two.

You can buy aged knobs...

http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0991369000

You can also get aged knobs, PUP covers, trem arm tip, and 5-way switch tips.

Do a google search for "relic strat pickguard" for instructions on aging a pickguard. Looks like most people are recommending tea. I know coffee is used also to age some arts and crafts projects. But they all say you have to sand or use steel wool on the pickguard first.

Personally I would not relic my own guitars. I just play them enough to let them get real character instead of "faux" character. It's kinda like rubbing holes in new Levis. Just doesn't look authentic.

On a related note, my EJ Sig Strat came with aged knobs, PUP covers, trem arm tip, and 5-way switch tip but the pickguard itself was not aged. It is white.

Depends where you are, smoking in bars and any other public places has been banned big time here.

Hope you find a solution for your guitar.

You are right there. Here in Maryland you are not allowed to smoke in Bars, Restaurants, Private Clubs or any enclosed work place. I dont no how people pay 5.00 a pack anyway

Long time ago I dropped in on another guitar forum; I think I was looking for the answer to some electrical question or other.

Came across a thread where people were arguing over whether the "blue note" is a sharp fourth or a flattened fifth (minor key). They were screaming at each other with such violent rage, calling each other amazing names and generally expressing themselves like psychotic eight year olds; page after page.

Eventually a mild-mannered fella looked in and suggested very politely that those two notes may in fact be one and the same thing. Immediately everyone turned on him like a pack of wild hyenas: "who do you think you are, you ****," etc. Finally they felt they'd seen him off and went back to shrieking at each other.

Wow  . I didn't sign up to that forum...

Someone once told us here that the Fender Forum has a reputation for being "snooty". Well, if that's what they want to call it - let 'em!

To the OP: try one of those little bags of lavander in the guitar case, why not?

We're snooty? Well.......I do drink a glass of wine with my pinky finger pointed up in the air........

Riversitter,
Ive exactly the same problem, Ive a partsofrankencaster that looks ace through age except the guard, bright white. I dont want to replace it ive had it from new. My forty a day habit has yellowed everything else nicely except said guard. I dont want to wire wool it, i may try a fretstone i just picked up (think you pointed me in the right direction for that too) on the back of the guard as a tester.

I am on several and it is not unusual for arguments to start over the most stupid points. This one made me laugh because we went from the OP to peeing on guitars in a few pages. I guess my main curiosity is whether the smoke damages anything.

Just your lungs. I don't think smoke will damage a guitar unless you consider yellowing to be damage.

@nikininja - Yep, the pickguard on my old yellowed strat is as yellow as the pickup covers and other parts. Strangely enough, the knobs are the whitest part now.

I think that smoking helps with the "vintage" look - especially the scorch marks left between the fifth and sixth tuning machines. :D

Hey Stratheads-

This Forum is the best...really down to earth. You are in a comfortable pair of shoes when you sign on to this place.-

I smoke...a number of things and particularly in my studio (Garage)- My ole Strat is like a filthy $@!&# . She looks sharp in the body- Not a scratch to be found in her midnight wine glow- but above that she is beginning to yellow and bleed- I love her so. wouldn't change her for anything in the world.

I don't understand the whole fascination with people wanting to "Relic" their Guitars....I just don't get it. If you want to make it look old...PLAY IT! Play it every day for 15 to 20 Yrs and watch it get old with ya !!!! My Baby (Filthy $@!&#) is only 8 yrs old and she is just starting to look like she's been Ridden Hard and Put up Wet a few times. And she's all Mine...

Always time for Mellow...

The Freeze
