I bought a used guitar from a smoker and it smells like smoke. I often see ads state that the guitar was in a smoke free environment. What damage does smoke do to a guitar? Is there any good way to get rid of the smoky smell? I am assuming my best bet is just a thorough cleaning next time I restring.

Be kind, I am just a newb.

Thx in advance for any help,
DP

Hi, DB. Welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question, but I just wanted to reassure you that the people on this forum will be more than kind. You're among friends here.

Ozium worked for me... I gave the inside of the case a good spray. (Do NOT use so much that it feels damp) Then close it up with the guitar in it for a few hours. Wipe it down with a good guitar polish afterward. Most "head shops" sell the stuff.

If you're going to be playing in bars your equipment is going to smell like smoke anyway. I think smoke will yellow the finish of the guitar but a lot of people prefer that "vintage" look. My white strat is quite yellowed from playing in clubs with poor ventilation. Looks vintage for sure. My Fender Twin Reverb still smells like smoke even though I haven't gigged with it for about 12 years. I hope my lungs don't look "vintage" too.

Depends where you are, smoking in bars and any other public places has been banned big time here.

Hope you find a solution for your guitar.

It sure does! Having played my '73 Strat with a cream finish for years in smoky clubs and halls, it ended up looking like this :

I agree w/ riversitter. By the way "I hope my lungs don't look "vintage" too" cracked me up, good stuff man.

Yeah the smoke can yellow a guitar & it's very hard to get that smell out of an amp. It is almost like it gets embedded in there.

I also agree with Russianracehorse. This is a VERY friendly board. I was kind of shocked when I came on board, most message boards are only interested in a "i been here longer" contest. Welcome to the Fender Forum buddy! Keep in touch,

I agree, too. And you never know. Maybe Eric Johnson or Jol Dantzig have just started posting here under a pseudonym. I'd hate to be the idiot to talk down to them just because they didn't have many posts (or red plectrums) to their name.

Better to judge people "on the content of their characters" rather than how long they've been on a website. And if everyone's friendly, then who cares anyway?

To the OP: welcome! And stay off the ciggies - for the guitar's sake.

Cheers - C

Long time ago I dropped in on another guitar forum; I think I was looking for the answer to some electrical question or other.

Came across a thread where people were arguing over whether the "blue note" is a sharp fourth or a flattened fifth (minor key). They were screaming at each other with such violent rage, calling each other amazing names and generally expressing themselves like psychotic eight year olds; page after page.

Eventually a mild-mannered fella looked in and suggested very politely that those two notes may in fact be one and the same thing. Immediately everyone turned on him like a pack of wild hyenas: "who do you think you are, you ****," etc. Finally they felt they'd seen him off and went back to shrieking at each other.

Wow  . I didn't sign up to that forum...

Someone once told us here that the Fender Forum has a reputation for being "snooty". Well, if that's what they want to call it - let 'em!

To the OP: try one of those little bags of lavander in the guitar case, why not?

Ta-ta - C

Hey Cerri,
I have a feeling I know what forum you are referring to LOL. I won't mention names, but I've encountered some seriously brutal boards.

I am so thankful that this one is full of cool people. I've made great friends from this board, and in a relatively short period of time. No climbing the popularity latter here!

You've got me beat. But my strat is not too far away from that color. Funny, but I think I saw a post here just this week with someone asking how to make their white strat a more "vintage" color. I didn't think suggesting smoking around it would be appreciated so I kept quiet. ;)

Fortunately my part of Texas is still free. :P Even though I don't smoke tobacco myself I support a private business's right to allow it on their property. I do appreciate good ventilation and outdoor gigs though.

I usually think I'm funnier than I am. But that doesn't stop me from saying stupid things.

I dont smoke in the house. I want one of my pickguards and some knobs yellowed. Im toying with the idea of soaking them in tea for a month or two. I cant stand that my self impossed ban is stopping my guitars from yellowing. Anyone got any yellowing tips? the only other idea ive got is to soak ciggs in water and then soak the parts in that solution but quite frankly the idea disgusts me.

Haha! Do you remember the thread where someone was talking about peeing on his guitar to make it yellow? He didn't get a lot of votes - or many handshakes.

I didnt see that thread, i hate to think how amonia would react to a nitrocellulose finish.

You'd have to be a sick puppy to whizz on your own guitar. Thank God he didnt want to realy relic it.
