Thanks for the info. What I am curious about is how they are getting that reliced strat to actually sound like a genuine vintage. Since I have had the pleasure of owning various strats from the 70's, I know first hand that the newer ones (although very nice sounding axes) can't cop that specific tone I love..and that relic has it.

Abigail Ybarra is one of the employees at Fender. She winds pickups for the Custom Shop and such. She has worked at Fender for over 50 years I think. Some artist won't play a guitar if it's pickups were not wound by her. She may be part of the "vintage" tone you hear.

Wow,
I get a kick out of all you guys that want to match tone with other players. Why? I like John Mayer and play a lot of his songs, but that's where it ends. It's gonna be me playing his song so I 'have' to put my own flavor on it.
I play my MIM strat straight with no effects through a Custom 5E3 tweed combo. From twisting knobs at the hip I can get pretty close to most of his clean tones.
I find it hard to impossible to match anyone's dirty tones. Too many variables. And JM may not have been able to scare up that exact same tone on the next set. Try this with a friend. Both of you play the same guitar on the same settings.... You'll sound different. Turn you amp off and come back the next day and you'll sound different.

Honor the dude by playing his tunes, but make them your own......

It's not so much about trying to sound like someone else..but sometimes you just like the sound of someones guitar and WISH that your's could be that sweet.

I only want to sound like myself when I play guitar..but I can't find an ax for under 3-4+ thousand dollars that comes close to the sound I could get from my 70's strats...which when I was a kid you could get one in the 500 dollar range. Wish I would have held on to at least one of them as now I can not afford one..but saving.

Johns ax in that youtube video is really sounding killer and reminds me of what my 70's sounded like. Well at least to my ears.

Okay Ebaysux,
(Nice moniker- I hate them too. I prefer craigslist because you don't get scammed with last minute bids by the poster).

Now I know what you mean. Yeah, you saw the Strat he was playing. If it's the real thing not one of those manufactuerd relics, it probably has tone stored up from decades of play. I think that most guitars get better with age. The way they sound as well as how they play. A friend of mine bought a '72 Tele Custom Reissue a few year back. My cousin has a real '72 Custom. I probably don't need to tell you which one sounds AND plays better. It was like night and day.

JM has that nice guitar, but you can't see what amp/effects he's playing that thing through. No telling what kind of mixing and tweaking his sound guy is doing or if he's running a couple of amps in stereo. It could be a the combination. I know that I have guitar/amp combinations that sound better than others.

See what happens....... You start philosiphying and what iffing when the best thing to do is........... grab that axe and play your heart out!!!

Keep your eyes peeled on craigslist. Some unsuspecting widow/divorcee may post what you're looking for.....

Yeah as you can tell by my handle, I have had my share of wonderful experiences with "evilbay". But don't want to open that can of worms.

Anyhow a few replies informed that the ax in the JM vid is not a vintage..but is a reliced custom shop...HOWEVER, it was custom built for him..and he has bucks, clout etc..I am sure he insisted it sound like the real deal..and to my ears it does.

I am getting a feeling it may be about the pickups..but not sure. I am not an expert on vintage vs. custom shop, I just know what sounds right to me.

I love John Mayer a lot but im not a John Mayer wanna be. I dont copy everything he does, i was just interested in that particular tone because it was very different and unique sounding.

Well apparently you like Frusciante as well. I think he just uses vintage Fenders (I have seen him using vintage strats, teles and jags) plugged into marshalls with overdrive when he needs it. But alot of his sounds come from his playing style..which is reminisant of Hendrix. As far as the JM tone..yes there is his playing style to consider, thats where it truly begins..and his effects/amp setups...but it doesn't hurt to have a Killer Strat like he does to complete the chain.

Does he by any chance play a Vintage Strat? Not saying that's the reason he sounds good..that starts at his fingers..but trust me..the guitar makes a difference.

EDIT: Nevermind. I clicked on the youtube link..that Strat is old as dirt...hmmmm..I wonder why I thought so?

actually that strat is just a couple of years old, it is a one of a kind relic made for him.....

Same difference more or less..if you have the money to have a vintage relic built for you..or the money to buy a real vintage..they are gonna sound quite tonier then any off the shelf strat..well you all know that by now..right? Opinions may differ..but the ears don't lie.

I have to agree here, a vintage strat through a marshall stack is awesome, no effects, when it clips the overdrive kicks in naturally and for great tones that's all you need.

Honestly, his tone is a product of a combination of his amps, effects and him. Just about any Strat with s/c pickups is going to sound like a Strat...that's why I love 'em...they're pure and honest and there's nowhere to hide when playing a Strat. The amp makes all the difference in the world.

whether its eric clapton "tone", john mayer, steavie ray vaughan,
its not to be a be a wannabe, its just for the sound.
now, what i have done is turn the gain up, lower the treble,
turn overdrive on, add some delay and compression.
turn the volume up.
now on the git, volume up, tone to 1, position 2 neck/mid
ive done this on my hwy, and am std. and it sounds sweet.

Man, I was so young when that Bowie song came out but I can remember all the buzz about this hot guitar player that did the soloing on let's dance. And been a fan since.

I can't say which is my fav SRV song..but all I know is there is never a bad time to hear one of his songs..I just love them all equally..his sound and emotion is the holy grail of modern blues guitar.
