I love all of John Mayers tones that he gets with his strats and I was just wondering, does anybody know how to get his tone in Belief at 4:24 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZHnVvy_Hxg . What pedals or effects does he use, please help.

Sounds like he just kicked in some OD at that point.

Good luck trying to figure that one out! :)

I think I hear a little delay and compression. He probably switched to the hot channel on his Two Rock amp as well.

He may discuss his set-up or setting on that song somewhere on the web if you search. Maybe in a guitar magazine interview.

If you find out, plese let us know.

I would just like to get the first few licks he did out of my Strat and I would be happy. I am still learning chords... :(

But we have to crawl before we walk and walk before we run!!!!!

Does he by any chance play a Vintage Strat? Not saying that's the reason he sounds good..that starts at his fingers..but trust me..the guitar makes a difference.

EDIT: Nevermind. I clicked on the youtube link..that Strat is old as dirt...hmmmm..I wonder why I thought so? Answered my own question.

Now for the answer to the OP's question...just shell out 5-10 thousand for a Vintage and you will have "instant" sweet tone too.

Same difference more or less..if you have the money to have a vintage relic built for you..or the money to buy a real vintage..they are gonna sound quite tonier then any off the shelf strat..well you all know that by now..right? Opinions may differ..but the ears don't lie.

Clearly, close your tone knob quite far, or all the way, not sure.
Add some overdrive(tube amp offcourse) and go for it!

OP-

John Mayer only uses the clean channel on his Two Rocks and all amps for that matter. He uses pedals to achieve the sound he desires for any one sound.

In general he gets his tone from the following amps either by themselves or in any combination. He uses Two Rock custom signature's, Two Rock custom reverbs, Two Rock Emeralds, Dumble Overdrive's, Fender Vibrokings, Fender Blues junior (relic NOS edition).

As far as effects used, As most rich young guitar players he loves gear. He tends to favor Original Ibanez TS 808's, Marshell BB2's, Keeley modded Boss BD-2's, He often times is running a compressor. I think that is key to achieving a similar tone. He uses either a T-Rex compressor or a Keeley compressor depending on the gig or song.

As far as what he kicked on at that particular moment in the Where the Light Is version of belief, I would guess a combination of at least two of the distortion pedals named above. As far as John Mayer tones go, the tone in question is on the extremely dirty end of his sounds.

I have some great scans from a magazine where he did like three or four pages of him discussing gear and his tone. I will post them when I get home.

For now here are some great links as to some of his gear:

http://web.mac.com/matthewsealy/Gear_de ... Intro.html

http://johnmayer.yuku.com/topic/1860/t/ ... 27-05.html

Hope I could help!

His number one (black strat in question) is a John Cruz Custom Shop heavy relic that he and John Cruz designed and built together.

Thanks for the info. What I am curious about is how they are getting that reliced strat to actually sound like a genuine vintage. Since I have had the pleasure of owning various strats from the 70's, I know first hand that the newer ones (although very nice sounding axes) can't cop that specific tone I love..and that relic has it.

Is it to do with the necks and body wood/finish, or more to do with the pickups..or some kind of "magical" combination? Because regardless of what anyone speculates or what effects and amps he uses..the tone originates at the guitar..and I feel that is a major contributing factor to his distinctive tone.

Actually tone is more a function of your playing style and your amp. No matter what guitar you play, you still sound like you.

I agree with that..but only to a point. Your instrument is a MAJOR part of the equation. Why do you think some musicians only play one type of guitar, and some use different ones for different songs.

As far as how you "sound" there is of course more to that then just tone. However I have 3 basses and they all have very different unique tones regardless of how I play them. But when the tone is just "right"..everyone notices..the ear does not lie.
