I've owned both and I prefer rosewood for the sound and look.

I think it would be rad to have a spalted maple fretboard!

I like Rosewood. Most of the guitars I have owned had Rosewood fingerboards. I only had 2 guitars that had maple fingerboards.

I slightly prefer maple on the Strats -- the tone is a bit crisper and I find I can finger a bit faster. But as others have noted, that's also wrapped up in the finish, neck shape and size. Both the MIM Strat I had several years ago and the AmStd I have now are maple.

But trust me ... if someone handed me a rosewood Strat I sure wouldn't be turning it down. I don't find the difference all that great between the two woods.

If I were blindfolded and just started playing a random Strat, I don't think I could tell you if it was maple or rosewood.

Over all the years I've been playing, I seem to favor rosewood overwhelmingly. And yes, I've owned plenty of both type boards.

The feel: With a maple board, I sense I'm playing ON it while with a rosewood board, I sense that I'm playing WITH it. In other words, I feel the rosewood board is softer and microscopically breathes or gives with the touch of your fingers while the maple is hard and doesn't give at all. I don't have a problem with either one and play them both in my one, normal way unless, the maple board has tiny frets and gobs of gloss finish on it in which case, I have to jack up the action so my fingers aren't slipping off whatever string(s) I'm bending. I think we all would agree that feeling the wood of a fingerboard is infinitely more desirable than feeling the finish applied over it.

The tone: I'd say the maple has a bit more presence whereas the rosewood has a bit more depth. For those who might focus on this, a tweak of the amp will easily compensate in either's direction.

The construction: Premising a one piece maple neck/board, if this particular piece of wood has a bad grain in it where this errant grain twists the neck and/or fingerboard somehow, there are less to no remedies to overcome the problem especially if the truss rod is ineffective. This includes planing or heating the neck as any single piece of wood has a proclivity to continue doing whatever it is that it has a tendency to do.

The look: I cannot unilaterally declare which board should be exclusively assigned to a given model of a guitar. I've always perceived that the sum of ALL the other parts on said guitar, most of all, the color of the body and all the plastic hardware ultimately determine which board would look the best.

The bottom line: If I was told to pick one board over the other for now and forever, without hesitation, I'd pick rosewood. And needless to say, all the aforementioned is merely my opinion where of course, your mileage may vary.

Hi,

I can't confirm anything about the sound since I only have one with maple neck, but maple is definately a good choice and you won't regret.

Each of my friends who tried it (yes I know, I will not let anybody try it anymore) were very surprised by the good feeling it gives, the touch and the look. All of them really like it. It's all about feelings. Not sure about the sound.

Thanks
Ben.

I have both and I prefer maple. Maybe it's my imagination, but I think the playability is better.

I don't know that I can tell much of a difference in playability, but I prefer the look of maple.

Is it just me ... or is this like asking if you prefer angel-hair or linguine pasta? Yes, there are differences between the two. But they are more alike than different. And ... hearing people's opinions between the two is kinda pointless. There is no wrong answer to the question.

By the way ... I prefer angel-hair pasta and rosewood fretboards. Just not together, though ...

For me its maple all the way….I do however love the Yngwie Guitar with the Rosewood . The contrast of the dark neck against the Antique white look great ….at least to me..Plus with the scalloped fret board you should never touch the rosewood anyway…….Just my opinion….Wylde Bill 8)

I don't have a strong preferance when it comes to playablility, but I think that Rosewood looks better on darker guitars (Red, Black, etc.)
