There's literally hundreds of responses to that question all over this forum. There's no firm answer one way or the other. It's just personal preference. Me, I'm a maple man. It's for purely esthetic reasons.

I agree, this is the true

I'm torn myself. I really like the look of the maple fretboards, but the rosewood doesn't show its age as easily. I've got both. For me, playability is about equal.

 To each his own. I have the opposite problem with the satin finish on my 06 maple strat. The palm of my hand hangs up on the neck when I start sweating. My hands are pretty acidic too. I'll eat up a set of nickel bullets in a couple of days. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

You just need to keep your neck wiped down.

Cryinstrat,
Guilty as charged. I do not wipe it down as often as I should like every time I play it.

oh boy...the ultimate strat preference question (maybe not). All of my guitars that i 'have' are rosewood.

For looks, maple all the way. rosewood to me should be on the brighter colored guitars, for balance. To me, they don't fell to different, maple is noticeably harder, i like the tone of both, and if i could have and am std, but they could only give me a roswewood, even though i'd like a maple, you'd be crazy to think i wouldn't grab it as fast as i can. There's nothing really that new pickups and your amps EQ can't do :)

Maple just looks like a 'true' strat, to me. In really bright lighting, rosewood can look like maple

here's the deal: (and this is just opinion)

maple is more percusive. so it'll have that strat brillance. its also harder so it will feel more sturdy which will make its seem like it plays faster. plus it absorbs your sweat so over time it will look like its been well loved.

Rosewood is softer, so it will have a warmer more rounded sound. since it is slightly softer is will feel like you have to put slightly more effort in your playing. stevie made this look like nuthin'

all in all it does just boil down to preference. every guitar i've had has been rosewood when i started playing. and i swore by it. but then i got a tele with maple and just feel in love. and a strat with maple. now i'm a maple kinda guy. but i say why not both? they have very valid applications.

Nice responses..
I went ahead and swapped out my Rosewood neck for Maple. I thought that the difference would be mostly cosmetic.... I was very very wrong. After a few minor adjustments to the action and intonation, I plugged her in and boy was I surprised.
The one piece maple was much smoother on the edges, the clarity of the tone was remarkable and everyting I played was smoother, brighter and crisper. My funk rhythm stroke had more of that crisp snap. My blues has a tad more bite.... I'm converted.

This neck adds some tonal qualities that weren't there using the Rosewood. When I play the guitar unplugged I can feel the resonance.

Found out yesterday that the neck I bought used was orignally on a Strat John Fogherty played during a benefit concert back in '95. This maple neck may just have some stored mojo that I'm releasing...

I prefer Rosewood, although my Ovation has an ebony fretboard.

That's the spirit Dark5tr0k3-
There's really no wrong answer to this question. Every Acoustic guitar I play has a Rosewood Neck, and nobody complains. It's a very good tonewood for the sides and back of an Acoustic Guitar too. However, the Maple really plays like butter, IMHO. That's why I went that way on my Stratocaster. If you really like that maple, it can be a good thing for you and your playing... its in your subconscious. I personally think you play a guitar with your brain first, and then your heart, hands, memory, skills and timing come into it-

Theres absolutely no difference in tone (to me). The reason why I think lots of people say maple boards have a more brighter sound is because its a brighter neck and the reason why people say rosewood boards have warmer sounds, its because it looks like it should.

My preference is maple because I have a sunburst and it looks better on darker colour bodies.

My #1 is a maple neck - as is my '83 standard; even though it's got so much finish on the neck it feels plastic.

I would say that my favorite necks are maple, but I was looking over my guitars the other day and noticed that I have 3 maple necks and five rosewood. hmmm....

Just to throw a curveball into this - what about ebony or any other exotics???
