ok so im restrung and tuned...the distance from the rear of the bridge to the body is definatly further..its tilted toward the neck twice as much as it was before...when I The tighten claw screws its defintalty closing the bridge/body gap slightly but those claw screws get pretti tight real fast and the fender giude says specifially "do not over tighten claw screws"...plz help..i know these questions get old, but am i doing something wrong? id say i got about a 1/6 inch gap there. maybe its nothing to worry about..but i really have know way of knowing. Im also going out of tune instantly when i use the trem. maybe thats just the brand new strings. I would really like to try to get this done myself..i could take it to the tech and give him $35 to do all of this right now, and make it perfect...but I REALLY WANT TO LEARN to work on my axe, as much as i want to learn to play it...so once again plz help..ill pay it forward one day

I left the claw as-is, and just added one additional spring (for a total of 4). That made the bridge flush against the body. That (combined with lubing with graphite the string tree, nut, and saddles) helps maintain the git in tune "pretty well" when using the trem. However, I rarely use my trem any more, considering my 4-spring setup a psuedo hardtail.

Also, make sure your new strings are stretched.

Note: My lack of trem use is due to personal preference, not because of tuning difficulties.

Just my $0.02...

.10's EB regular slinkys

i think i got it...it seems fine now. not sure what i did. everything on the guitar seems fine now..i have a little buzz on the low-e but thats when a plunk/pick real hard..other than that action seems better(even though i wasnt able to make any sort of truss adjustment) ill play it like it is now...when my needs change ill start making more adjustments...

Ive had enough today, didnt realize how finicky these things actually are, they(guitars) seem to make their own rules, which is unlike anything else ive ever worked on.

Have you checked your intonation?

my claw screws......one is lower the the other. the whole spring assembly is ever so slightly at an angle. is this normal? or did a get a defective mexican.

it looks like the claw screw on the bass side is slighly lower..treble side slightly higher...i have no way of knowing if this is normal. honestly the screws look as if they where half during @ssedly screwed in during second shift at the factory. im getting sick of the tremelo headaches.

I had this problem the first time I changed my string gauge on a strat. From what I remember it is a balancing act.

You bounce back and forth between tightening screw & tuning the strings. Loosening screws and tighenting strings.

I had to go back & forth. Which is hard to do because when you tighten or loosen the trem claw you have to flip the guitar over to see if it is raised or sitting flat. Than you start to tune the strings and the trem starts to float higher.

Try to loosen all your strings a little. See if your trem is flat now. Because if my thinking is correct as you tune the guitar the strings will try to pull the trem up . Don't tune all the strings in order. Go low E then high e, then A then B then G then D. Once you figure out how to balance it and what order to go in you get mad at yourself because now it seems easy.

I need Chet to double check what i am trying to say. Feel free Chet.

Your Strat comes from Corona set up with 9-42 if you changed to 10's it will pull up your tremelo. The factory setting is usually an 1/8" from the body with proper intonation. I like mine almost flat because I tend to rest my palm against the bridge saddles. It's a matter of preference.

There are plenty of decent books out there that will walk you thru a basic setup. Also talk to your local music shop guitar tech where you got your instrument.
