Playing guitar takes a few dollars, and the spending never seems to end.

Expensive, yes
Worth it, YES

Wait until you start buying more (and more) guitars. It can really get outrageous. Then you start running out of room, then you have to decide which one to sell in order to make room for the new one that you just have to buy.

Brother don't even get me STARTED on amps!

- Strings you can get at GC or musicians friend, like a set of 10 for $30 or something
- $25 capo? did you get some goofy shub techno thing or something? the average kyser or dunlop is like $12 or $15
- feeler gauges and technical ruler? are you "making" a neck or something? i've done my neck for years and have never use those
- tuners - yet. they're good. I got a seiko chromatic at GC for like $20 though, very accurate up to double digit percentages, very nice.

but once you get this stuff, you won't have to buy it again. it might be $90 now, but if you didn't have these, it would be more than that in a years worth or set up and tune ups, so it pays for itself, plus you learn how to do it

new strings usually sound a lot better than old, rusty ones. It seems the perception that changing to a different kind of string (ex. more expensive)is a "much better sound" when really it was just the old strings were quite ready to be changed.

You'll learn, young Jedi. We all do.

Also, you may want to pick up some single strings, like 3 high E's and 3 B's, so if you pop one changing you don't have to buy a whole new set and waste the rest. It's good to have a few extras anyway. Keep 'em in an empty string pack somewhere.

I used some extras a while back to high-string an extra acoustic I had. (same tuning, but you replace the bottom thick wound strings with the thinner unwound higher strings). Very cool in it's own way, if you have an extra guitar to do it on. Watch the truss though, much different tension.

Welcome to the club!

The way I've always looked at is, it is an investment in yourself.

There's thousands of worse ways to spend your money and even more thousands of ways to just waste it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of guitar addiction. My wife would say I already have plenty of stuff but I could ALWAYS buy more, whether it's strings, straps, tuners, picks, capos, and those are the inexpensive things. Then you move into the guitars and amps. Now that can get expensive.

Now, where did I put that winning lottery ticket . . . 8)

One day you'll look into your music room and realize you've got over $20K worth of gear and still don't have eveything you want. It's a sobering moment. Some players use this epiphony to trim themselves down to basics. Some just think "I need a bigger music room". There's some here with well over $100K worth of gear and guitars.

Bottom line, it's as expensive as you allow it to get.

By the way...since when do you need a capo for a setup?
Just kidding of course.

I got back into playing guitar when a friend of mine wanted someone to play with (me). He told me that I could put together a small amp, and an inexpensive guitar for a couple of hundred dollars.

Well......I ended up with three guitars (I wouldn't call them cheapies by any means), two amps, multiple pedals, tuners, and various goodies. One guitar has already gone to the shop for a fret dressing........and the costs just keep going on. I dont' think there's such a thing as playing guitar as a hobby and it being cheap.
Oh yeah......one of the guitars I bought (after I had gotten back into playing).......I never intended to buy. I walked into the store for another cheap purchase.......saw this one guitar......fell in love with it.......and bought it. Those kind of things are kinda hard to explain to a wife. So......if you're just starting out........get yourself a good job, so that you can pay for this expensive hobby. You'll need the money.
