And why was this important for readers of the Stratocaster Forum to know?

I have a recent interview with Kirk which I believe goes into some detail regarding the equipment he used. I'll have to dig that out and reread.

Might be interesting to Fender players in general, even if its not important for you. I'll save you some time. Read the current edition of Guitar World...

Interesting for sure. I think the point was that it might have been better suited in the Telecaster forum, since it was about a Telecaster :)

You know back in '80's Kirk used a Fender Strat he named "Hamstercaster". Used to love the sounds that came out of that guitar. He switched to ESP and the band slid downhill for a while. Interesting that he used a Fender (although a Tele) and they have one of the most aggressive CD's I've in years. I agree that this subject would've been better recieved in the Tele Forum.

Other than the fact that he's in Metallica forever, and took lessons from Satch, I was never really too impressed with him, to be honest. Fast? yeah, but nothing spectacular. The content of what he plays is like a good, basic guitar player, that plays it faster, and happens to be in Metallica.

I don't know, he's cool and all, but nothing outstanding to me. Lot of really basic, remedial stuff in his playing to me.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I think what makes Kirk different from other guys who "play fast" is that his playing sounds like music. Not just shredding. Yeah, he's nothing compared to like a Y. Malmsteem as far as shredding speed goes, but it is the writing and the emotion that make his playing good. If you really listen to the music without the "he ain't all that great attitude" and listen to the total control he has over the intrument, its really good playing.

Too true re: better suited to the Tele forum. But have you noticed the Nashville Teles? It's evolving into a Strat! (the same pickup configuration) Next thing you know it will start sprouting a proper upper horn. Then the headstock will transform.

Now on to Kirk and the rest of the really fast guys. Heck if you really listen many of them just play fairly rudimetary stuff very fast. Yeah there are a few that are virtuoso's but mainly it's just about speed and that just isn't all that impressive, it's just fast. (but most of us do go through a "fast phase" in our playing.)

It's all in what you like

I'm glad he went back to Fenders. Why play an ESP when the real deal is available.

I take it that mkubala20 and mthorn00 have no classical training or music theory training judging by the statements made about SHRED style. True most players just muck things up and play straight up scales and such, but there's a select few that would completely AMAZE you if you had the ear to pick up on what's really being played. Kirk is not one of them and also needs to learn to GET OFF THE CRY BABY! I do give him credit for being a great blues metal player though within his own taste and style.

Good examples would be Yngwie's "Arpeggios From Hell", Vinnie Moore's "Meltdown", Nevermore's Jeff Loomis' "Engines Of Hate", or even my own "When Phrygian Meets Aeolian" or "G Minor Lost It's Mind Again". These are great examples of almost impossible string-skipping arpeggios, twisted broken chording, leggato within sweep picking and/or raking, triplets & quads at warp speed with EVERY note being picked, ect. all done EXTREMELY clean and NOT chromatically. Just to even be able to play that stuff at a very slow speed is elusive for most. I don't disrespect Blues, Country, Classic Rock, or anything else other players may do, but rather I try to respect them for what they are ABLE to do in a clean and structured fashion...

Kirk's a avid vintage fender collecter.
His playing of late and his idea's for solo's are poor atleast. Gone are the days of the exciting kill em all stuff, melodic master of puppets, pure metal ride the lightning and even the tremendous unkeyed solo's of justice for all. He's just another joe getting a paycheque now. It makes me cry and proved to me that i had to get away from extreme styles before i hit 35.
Fast and good are not mutualy exclusive neither are fast and bad. I can be terrible or great at any speed, depending on my motivation to play at the time.

Very well stated my brother, but..."Get away from extreme styles before I hit 35?" We're both 36 I believe and I'm still at it so...I guess that I RESEMBLE that remark  !

Cheers my friend.
