Hey guys, (and gals)
I just got my strat a few weeks ago, it was brand new, so besides what was done at the factory it has not been set up yet...Im a beginner player and after a few weeks of getting the "feel" i think its time to go ahead and do it. Im learning chords right now and i have short stubby fingers. at the recommendation of an instructor Im going to use a light gauge strings, and lower the action a little.
Im a do it yourself type and i have decided im going to be my own tech. Im the mechanical type and im not scared of doing it. But i do have a few questions first....(i have read the manual about 4 times already these items are not covered or are not clear). these may seem silly, but forgive me I AM BRAND NEW TO GUITARS thats why i want to do this myself.

1. the tremelo springs....there ARE 4 correct? if im using a light gauge string should i use only 3?( i notice some doing this)

2. the fender manual says to get some 2 in 1 oil. but never says for what.

3. on 2008 a MIM strat hss, my bridge is the vintige trem right?

4.fender reccomds 1/8 inch gap between bridge and body. then breifly states that some like to have it against the body and do this by using equal tension strings, and equal tension strings??? isnt that the way it always is??? whats better and why. why would somebody want it flush with the body

5.when measuring "between top of fret to bottom of string..is that top of the actual metal fret...or top of the wood.

anyways ill probably have more questions later. sorry if these are stupid..if anyone would like to offer any tips or suggestions feel free.. i could probably use the help thanks in advance.

1. I use 3 springs with .010s (triangle configuration) \I/

2. I don't know either (but someone will chime in that does).

3. Yes, vintage tremolo w/thicker block and more stable point of contact with strings.

4. Some block the trem and use as a hardtail.

5. Top of fretwire.

I don't think of these as "stupid" questions. These are all recommendations and you may find that some experimental tweaking may give you a better feel and sound. Good luck!

There is no "correct" amount of springs. It is a personal thing. I use 5 springs with 9's and 10's.

I don't remember ever using 3 in 1 oil on any guitar.

what do you mean 9's and 10's? are you referring to the gauge of the guitar strings?, or are there different size trem springs availale? by the way is there any sort of tonal difference or advantage to leaving the backplate off the guitar?i see alot of people doing this..why? is it just the cool thing to do or what?

I am referring to string guage. The back cover is also a personal choice. I prefer off for no specific reason.

I use Nut Sauce (look for it online, they even give you a free smaple) for all metal to metal contact, even on string trees. It's just less messy than oil.

I also use nines (strings) and three springs = \|/

A heads up here: do not try to set the intonation until you have finished everything. Also, lower actions do help some with short stubby fingers, but the harder you pick (and the heavier pick you use) will determine action height.
