Hi all, just purchased a 1996 Phat Strat. He claimed to have gotten it as a gift back then and just put it in his closet with no interest. It cost me $200. Being fairly new to the guitar world and not having skills to change parts on my own for fear of ruining it,I'm thinking since it sat so long(so he said) and all of the hardware has a kind of discoloration like weathering or corrosive type of look. Maybe with a little cleaning I could take care of it, but I'm thinking replace ALL of the hardware, strings, tremolo etc through a professional. Is it worth it?$ What do you guys think :?:

Thanks

you know, people pay ALOT of money just to have hardware that looks just like what your describing. DO NOT replace anything but the strings...strats and their hardware are like wine...they AGE and get their own sort of mojo after time...only replace things that are broken...or dont work. you may want to remove the pickgaurd and inspect the guts. look for any undone wires and what not. do some research and do it yourself. Im new to guitars and its not that hard. got any pics??

It would be cheaper to find the parts on eBay or Craigslist and replace them yourself. It's fairly easy to do. AND it's fun to do too!!!!

I don't think it is worth it, but you aren't planning on spending my money to replace all of the hardware.

Can you show us a picture of the offending hardware?

I think most people prefer the look of a naturally aged guitar. My vote is to leave em as they are. Who wants a 12 year old guitar that looks brand new?
