I have both, and they are both great guitars.
the hotrod has a thick neck w/9.5" radius
the EJ has a soft v neck w/12" radius
they are wired the same way with 2nd tone working the bridge pup
both sound great, the EJ is a bit brighter with the maple neck
it's a tough choice between the two and they are both expensive

Hello Jeff_P,

Well I am a rosewood fretboard user
so the '62 hotrod with it's great neck
does it for me.

That said the quarter sawn Johnson neck
is pretty special and comfortable.

If you can play em both.

Cheers.

+1 I had an EJ for a short time. The neck was too sticky for me with the gloss lacquer. I probably could have cured that with some 0000 steel wool, but I opted to return it for an exchange for a '62 Hot Rod with the satin finished neck. It suits me fine now.

That sticky neck goes away once the lacquer fully cures. Until it does, simply wiping it down with a dry cloth fixes it. I've had mine for over two years now, great neck, no sticky. I haven't played the 62 'cept at that store. It's a sweet guitar. I'll keep my EJ though.

had the sticky neck problem with my 57 hotrod. It does dissapear after a while though. The more you play it the faster it goes.
