I've been playing for 3 years on acoustic and decided to get a strat, first one so I'm not familiar with how it all works. But the tuners are quite bad at tuning up, takes forever. They usually stay in tune once tuned up, but going to drop d, or 1/2 step down and back takes forever.
I don't ever use the whammy bar, not my style, and I'm afraid I'll break some strings if I pull up/down too hard so i don't even use it. Any ideas on the tuners? Are they crap or does it have something to do with this tremolo bridge assembly??

I totally agree with you. The tuners do suck! I changed mine to the vintage 60s style tuners and I love them. It takes a little longer to re-string, but they stay in tune better and tune up faster. They make a special tuner for your E string that, with the flip of the lever puts you in drop D, flip it back and you are back to standard. No re-tuning involved. As far as you half step changes, youre better off having a second guitar on hand. Throw two more springs in your bridge and whammy away! The guitar will stay in tune and you wont break strings!

The ping tuners were okay, but the locking tuners are better, but as I've mentioned, I wish vintage tuners (with slots) were still standard issue.

I just love those vintage slotted tuners! Slide the string in the slot, leave a little slack....a few cranks and some stretching and your done. Sometimes the simplest is the best.

The highwat 1 is a "good" guitar, not a great one. I like the wieght and the shape of the neck, but ive found myself spendin as much on better parts as i did on the axe itself. Mine is the limited edition 2 tone sunburst. I changed the tuners to the 60s style (gold) as well as the string saddles. asingle ply pick guard has 3 texas specials and hides the deluxe pickup underneath for a 12db boost at wide open volume. I also put a brass nut on for a little brighter tone. I made everything to look like it came right out of 1963 and have named it the Highway to hell strat. And now it is the perfect guitar for me!

My wine transparent and rosewood strat was in tune when I got it home from gc, and they hadn't tuned it for a while. Since it was set up at 435 and is a darker vibe from the Highway One alnico, I retuned it to 440. I haven't had to retune. With many hours of playing under the hood, it's still right on. I don't use the tremolo for vibrato though. Seems like any $500 guitar can get better with some hot rod touches. After I get past the Blues Jr. amp (that's going to be a big negotiation) I might go looking for that awesome nut from the custom shop Strat Pro and Beck signature models that has the tiny ballbearings. That was amazing. Locking tuners also from the custom shop and Beck also sound pretty good. I'm tempted by noiseless pickups, but whenever I play them they sound dead. The Highway One's sound really sweet, especially with the switch in the neck forward slot, and they humbuck in 2 and 4. So, I'm pretty skeptical about noiseless from what I've heard, but custom shop is doing them, and so is Clapton, and so I'll consider. Then, maybe I'll block the tremolo since I never use it. All these mods might trickle in over a few years to create my own unique instrument. Or, maybe I'll leave it alone because it sounds so good, and just play the heck out of it.
