gotta be waaaaaaaaaaaaay more specific.

without ANY details on what you like, how you play, what style, etc. I'll just go ahead and say to get and American Strat.

Squire are a excellent choice. Fender Mexico are a far better choice though. Which ibanez and washburn models do you have? if they are similar in set up sell your least favourite of the two and get a good Mexican Fender. You wont regret it the strat hasnt changed much in 54 years for a very good reason. It hasnt had to!

The N4 is a great guitar. I'd sell the Ibanez and get a usa strat. Metal guitars are great for what they do i own a jackson and esp myself. You just cant beat the classic's though.

JellyBellyRockinBabe,
First of all, welcome to the forums. Hope you will be happy hanging out with our merry band.

The only Squier strat I have had much hands on time with is the deluxe and it is a very nice instrument - considering the price range we are talking about.
You would be better off, IMHO, spending a little more and stepping up to a MIM standard Fender...

But there is nothing at all wrong with the Squier Deluxe. Nothing at all.

If you get the Squier, your gonna want to move up to a better strat after a short period of time. I suggest that you sell the Ibanez and get a USA strat. You have a lot of good choices with different set ups. Good luck!

My vote has to be a mexican strat. Obviously if you don't want to spend a lot of dough as you said, then the american is not an option. I would go after a used mexican though rather than a squire. The Mexicans are quite bullet proof and you can get a pretty good deal on a used one.

If your budget is low to mid use Craigslist.org

Mexican strats are a great choice, but American Strats are just far better. If you wait a little bit, you should be able to find whatever you want on Craigslist

Idk if u know anything about wiring, but I'll tell u what I did. I got a 1988 Japanese Strat HM (stands for Heavy Metal) from a friend for $40. (Keep in mind, the body is in bad shape and the neck pickup doesn't work, but hey, u get what u pay for.) It has single coils in neck and mid, and a standard DiMarzio Humbucker in bridge. It came with a broken coil tap switch when I got it, though I don't think it was factory. I got a new switch at the local guitar shop for a buck and installed it myself. I proceeded to rip apart all the wiring and hook it up correctly. (one of the many previous owners had jimmied with it and screwed it all up) Most of it was easy, but I had difficulty figuring out the wiring for the humbucker, so i used jumpers and expiremented with different connections until i found a sound i really liked. on the five way selector, the neck (i will call it 1st) position is a kill switch cuz the p'up doesn't work. the 2nd and 3rd positions are the mid p'up. The 4th is a very thin sound (thinner than that of a single coil), with a low amount of bass response, so I will put bigger strings on it. then, in the bridge position, I have 2 options cuz of the coil tap. either single coil in one position on the on-on mini toggle or full-blown hummer in the other. It's pretty sweet and sounds great. the neck is in good condition and the cosmetic damage doesn't amount to all that much. It's my favorite guitar at the moment and it cost me a total of $41 and my time.
If u find a cheap Strat HM, buy it and hold onto it, cuz they are awesome. However, make sure all the pieces are there cuz Fender discontinued everything that only fits the HM. Sorry if this was just a giant waste of time, and happy hunting.

Try out a few hundred Strat's, make sure you get the right one, you know? Just remember, the Strat you get is 100% irreplaceable, you won't be able to find another with the EXACT same tone. Know what I mean?

A MIM Strat would be a good choice. I loved my '07 MIM Strat (arctic white with maple fb) but sold it to help finance my '08 MIA Std. It's a big jump up in quality (IMHO) but that said, I absolutely loved my MIM neck. It was very slim and played very fast, plus it was a dream to do bends on.

Go and play as many Strats as you can to see what you like the best. I'm not sure all MIM Strats are created equal so if your budget is more in line with a MIM ($399), play as many as you can and pick out the one that speaks to you.

Happy hunting.

I'm gonna pretty much ditto a few other folks here. I would play as many as you can then go with what feels best. Most everything else is semantics. So if a MIM strat feels the best then buy that, if a MIA custom shop feels better then save your pennies and buy that one.

On my current strat, I liked the rosewood neck on one but wanted the black nitro body color on the other. they did the switch right there.
