Ok in birmingham uk there was a great shop 'musical exchanges'. From 94-2001 it was the biggest guitar showroom in europe (the size of half a soccer pitch packed with axes). It was sold to a company called 'sound control' in 2004 and went bust earlier this year causing much misery. It has been re-opened by the receivers and is selling off all the old stock. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices
1, a mexican strat like the hendrix voodoo strat (reverse head and bridge pickup) £220
2, a first run aerodyne, the all black one with no pickguard £305
3, A Yuri Shishkov twisted tele £3950 (requires a bankloan)

All of em real bargains. The tele's a bit of a pipedream but do-able. Ive always liked the blacker than black aerodyne's. now that im done modding my squire series strat the voodoo strat looks a excellent platform for another mod job.

Theres also a large selection of Fender, prs, jackson and marshall.

forget the twisted tele. If i sent it back to fender with a note asking Mr Shishkov to fit a earvana to it, he'd probably fly over and beat me round the head with it. :D

I'm not going to vote for either one because I don't want the blame later when you say to yourself, "I should have got that one while I had the chance". If it was not for that fhopkins guy ????//////

Fhopkins,
If i had my way i'd buy all three. Whatever i get im going to cop hell off the missus over anyway. Im realy drawn to the Aerodyne. Japanese fender for £300 seems a once in a lifetime deal.

Am I mistaken??? Was it you who recently wrote that your wife has directed that for your next purchase you'd have to sell three of what you presently own?? Or was it another one of our unfortunates???

What is confusing me most, Niki, is that this is going on right now. I went into Turnkey in the Charing Cross Road about four days after Sound Control went under and there were about half a dozen shop-soiled Squiers and a lonely CS Mary Kaye left unbought. The vultures had descended and stripped that corpse clean within hours. That was months and months ago. How come the Birmingham branch is only now meeting its end?

Anyway. Nuts to your list: I'd find an American Deluxe Tele like Snowy's and buy that. Half the bank loan, half the grief from the Missus.

(Snowy's Tele is hurting so much cos about 18 months ago I actually had the cash in my hot little hand to buy that exact model, but couldn't find an example with nice enough grain on the body. I promised umpteen guitar shops to buy on the spot if they could only order in a pretty one, but they wouldn't order without cash in advance, sight-unseen, non-refundable. For that price - couldn't do it.)

So: go shopping - our spirits go with you.

Good luck - C

Nick,

If those are your choices, then I'd personally have to say the Aerodyne, but none of the three are really appealing to me. Being that we both like Fenders AND Jacksons it may be not too far-fetched to think about the Floyd Rose model Strat as a starting point for modding as it has most of the attributes that we both like about these two guitar companies. I've been wanting to get one, but I'm a little worried that it's a MIM Strat and you already know what happened to my MIM Straight Six Strat :x . Anyway it's just a thought bro. No matter what you decide, I'm sure that it'll be the right decision because when it comes to buying more gear there really isn't a WRONG decision if it makes you happy and satisfied in the end...Right? 8)

Okay here's what I do.... take the number of things/guitars that you are choosing between, then stick out the corresponding number of fingers, then slap all of those fingers against something (ie a table edge), and whatever hurts the most is what you go with. Pain never lies.

It's been a couple of days, a lifetime in a Close The Doors kind of sale.

So what happened!?!? What did you pick up?

missed the chance friday (paycheque blues, sorted now) maybe for the best anyway, do i realy need another guitar anyway?

Napalmbbq
Thats the best solution to indecision i've ever heard. I did it and the voodoo mexican strat won. Bit of a moot point now though.

Ceri
The shop has re-opened under the name 'Reverb'. The same name as soundcontrol's magazine. I think the receivers have deemed it a ongoing concern. From the prices i saw that could be the only explanation, £220 for a good mexican strat is Usa price without the import taxes. Incidently they had sienna deluxe's there for around the £ 6-700 mark, i know your after one. The finish looked a bit dulled to me, maybe it could be polished back to the original lustre. The strings and general feel of the guitars also lead me to the conclusion that the intruments have been stored as is during the closure.

Your correct, the missus did put that cursed stipulation upon my spending habits. Still she knows guitars are like taxes. Her main problem with my acquisitions is space and storage. For the foreseeable future i'm going to be away from home during the week and working around my hometown area. So i could keep it at my mums. :D just like being 15 again.

Shreddin
I never wanted a fender for metal. Like we discussed before there are far better manufacturers for that market. Fenders cleaner sounds have always seemed too delicate to me for high gain stuff, despite my several attempts at pickup changes with my gig strat.

Niki, we'll get your wife and mine together and some of the latter's "bad" attitudes might rub off - to your advantage. 'Er Indoors never complains about my spending habits - in fact she encourages them! She did once raise an eyebrow a touch when I spent several thousand pounds having Premier custom build me a seven peice Maple Signia drumkit in (at the time) non-production "standard" sizes, a couple of years after that model had gone out of the catalog (I like the tubelugs...) but that was as heavy as it has ever got.

Of course, I have to turn an equally friendly face towards her spending activities, which put mine in the shade. Imelda Marcos was a rank amateur in the shoe shopping field, for instance. And she's the only person I know who impulse bought a Jaguar on the credit card (true). Champagne, anyone?

Cheers - C

PS That all makes our life sound a lot more glamorous than the reality. But we have our moments...
