Or maybe the norm is to avoid-at-all-costs mid '70s Strats.
But the reason for the purchase seemed to be something other than to play it.

An old guitar is just an old guitar. Stuff wears out and wears down. I bought my '74 Strat back in 1980 because it was a good deal. I played the heck out of it and enjoyed it. Would I go out of my way to buy it NOW just because it's old? Probably not. With new guitars you have many more choices. Buy a new one unless you plan on stashing it in a display case because it's your "vintage guitar".

But not all old guitars are equal. It's like your second sentence: "Stuff wears out and wears down." Some old guitars are worn out some aren't. Finishes can get beat up, but that's cosmetic, the important parts are the frets and electronics (assuming the neck hasn't warped or twisted like a pretzel). I've had fret work done on guitars (from leveling/recrowing to complete refretting) to give them a whole new life!

Is your '74 worn out? Unplayable now?

That last statement holds a lot of truth. I probably wouldn't buy the guitars I have if I had to pay today's prices for them.

Sorry it took so long for the reply, havent been online in a couple weeks

Well, the guitar is in very good shape for 33 years old - it doesnt play as well as the new ones, as far as what I like - the frets are too small - the pickups have a bit of a hum - other than that, its very nice - it has some nice weather checking - all the original stuff, trem bar, ash tray, original case - too me, its something I had always wanted, since I started playing guitar - I pull it out of the case and play it unplugged every now and then just to see it and mess around with it - would I ever play it out somewhere? Absolutely not! Is it something id take into the studio? Possibly, just for the idea of recording with my '75 Strat - If someone was looking for a CBS strat to play often, im sure a re-issue is a better playing choice - but, its not the "real deal" - But like I said upfront, I bought it for other reasons, I have several other strats to pick from when its time to play - this is just something I wanted and will pass on down to my little boy one of these days

Nope she still plays nice. I actually meant that I wouldn't pay the prices they are starting to ask for Strats of that vintage. Not when new ones play just as well or better in most cases.

I'm glad to hear it still plays well. I agree with you about current prices of older Strats.

I believe it stands for
Columbia Broadcasting System.

It was the corporation that owned the Fender company from 1965 through 1984.

You got that right.
CBS = Columbia Broadcasting System
They bought Fender and almost wrecked a great company. Don't get me wrong, some of the ideas were pretty good, just poor implementation and a (now common) Corporate philosphy of greed. Profit over Product. :(
