Fender bodies have been made from a number of different timbers, including alder, ash, "swamp" ash, poplar and basswood. Sometimes even mahogany.

FMT = Flame Maple Top
QMT = Quilt Maple Top

Both of these are "caps" roughly a quarter inch thick or so (as distinct from a veneer), glued on top of a body made from one of the above woods to make it look beautiful and possibly brighten the tone a little, too. Same as on Les Pauls and many other guitars. Look at the American Deluxe section of the products pages to see some of those.

Cheers - C

ok so alder, ash, swamp ash, poplar and basswood are all just the types of wood the body is made up of? and what the difference in flame top and a quilt top? the look the same.

With great respect, no they don't. Again, just click "Products" above, and take a look at American Deluxe at the top of the Strat selection. You will find FMTs and QMTs amongst those. To put it crudely, Flame Maple is kinda stripy; Quilt Maple is kinda blotchy. For that matter, Birdseye Maple is kinda spotty (though Fender use that occasionally for fingerboards rather than body fronts).

Those are all what people would call "high figure", meaning figuration of the wood. Highly prized; highly priced.

+1 -- Ceris is right. They look nothing alike:

Quilted -- Wavy looking; some look so 3D it as if it is hologram
Flamed -- Looks like tiger stripes

Both are very nice looking. I am partial to "flamed", though. But you can blame that on my Gibson "up bringing". The flamed tops was/is very popular on Les Pauls:

Your welcome.

That's a cool Les Paul, isn't it? Always room for pictures like that here - we're not Stratocaster fundamentalists, after all... :wink:

Nice one, 01GT.
