How does a think skin finish differ from a "normal" skin?

Why is thin skin considered premium and what some people refer to as Custom Shop finish?

I am in the market for a 70s Strat (ideally the real deal), but I am also keeping an eye on the MIA reissues, which seem to have the thin skin.

One think I don't like partilalry about all the new guitars is that the ash looks too white, whereas I love the yellow (aged) look of original 70s guitars. I wonder how this thin skin would age....

Any thoughts?

The thin skin is meant to let the guitar breathe more. The difference between it and a normal finish is that it will wear away quicker, im not sure if it will yellow quicker. I dont think it will. Yellowing has more to do with enviroment than laquer applied. I had a mim squire that had over 1kg of polyurethane finish on it. It yellowed over 7 years, due to my 40 a day habit.

I think you should call and talk to the good folks at the shops that sell them, like Music Machine and Dave's Guitar Shop (I forget the 3rd shop that started the Thin Skin line). They would be happy to tell you all about them.

I agree, Wildwood Guitars in Colorado is the other dealer.
