gig bags are a great way to "relic" a guitar rather quickly.

I have to jump on the hard case side myself, even though I'm "careful," don't gig in bars or clubs and most of the people I know are 50+ and generally don't go wild at my house or if I'm at theirs.

Yeah, boring, I know ... but my point is that even with all this care, things can happen. For example, one time I was jamming at my GF's house with her brother and her cousin. The cousin had just bought a brand new LP and when we were done, he popped it back in the gig bag he got with it and had it leaning up against the couch.

Imagine our horror when her kitten came racing into the room, slammed into the bag and over it went. Things like that unfortunately happen and that's why I always use hard cases. Gig bags are fine for keeping them flat at home (if you have to ... don't have enough stands, say) because it will keep dust and dirt off the guitars. But other than that ... not much value in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree with that too. But also...

That was his fault in the first place.

I supposed I'd be much safer driving a tank to work. You know, "just in case". I might just decider to side-swipe a bunch of parked cars! You never know! Things happen!

Naw tanks are too hard to park.
But you SHOULD wear your seatbelt (cuz things happen)

Seat belts, air bags, flak jacket, hi-impact helmet, motion-sickness medicine, hypothermia blanket, collapsable water bottles, signal flares, 30-days or army rations, snake bite kits, radiation suit, and I'm ready to leave the house :)

Sorry, I just like ranting about clumsy baffoons that like to blame their retardiness on something else.

Squier make a really nice fur lined hard case for really good price - was so glad of it the day I moved house and my 72 custom fell out of the transit van onto the road!

Not a scratch or a dent!

I'm kind of on the fence about whether to use a gig bag or a hard case for my guitar, but let me tell you an experience I had regarding gig bags.

I live in Hawaii, and around 2001 Eric Johnson came to town to play a one-night blues festival at this park in Honolulu. The stage was rather small and sitting to the side of it, I could see everything going on backstage. After the last of the opening acts were finishing their set, I could see EJ walking up to the back of the stage to get ready for his show. On his shoulder was a gig bag and out of it came his vintage 50's strat. True story.

I guess the point is that if a gig bag is good for Eric Johnson, it should be good enough for the rest of us.
