Wow, well I guess you're a fan of gigbags. I prefer to err on the side of caution especially since my guitars are all American made and cost me a fair amount of cash. I also don't take chances by leaning my guitars up against amps, they always sit in a stand. In closing, since I drive to practice the weight of a hardshell case isn't really an issue.

Keep rocking Brothers

Friends don't let friends use gig bags.

I just got a new guitar--and even though it will rarely leave the house I still got a hard shell case for it. I prefer to err, spend and carry on the side of caution. It's worth it.

(I can sympathize with the carrying the guitar around. I have an Iceman that has a huge rectangular case. Those curbs & steps banged it up a lot--and it wasn't always fun to carry--but way better than a gig bag.)

Yeah, if you're a clumsy oaf and will surely bang up your guitar, than don't bother with a gig bag. If you're a pro that knows how to handle your gear, they're great in the right situation.

Yeah, because "pros" always carry their own gear around

You think someone carries your guitar to a regular practice for you? Or holds the door for you or something? You're mixing professionals with JUST world tours where you have a team hired to set up stages. And even then, nobody is carrying your guitar for you to the hotel room, dude :)

Hey Stratheads-

Well this topic has really lit the boards on fire-

I can accept both arguments for and against Gig Bags- And I really like the comment about being clumsy ....

What it all comes down to is practicality- Those of us who use gig bags don't love our strats any less then those who keep their babies in Fort Knox. A Gig bag is just practical for some of us.

As for having a Roadie....Well that's my 14 yr old son and he takes great care of my gear.

That's why these opinion threads are so much fun. Sometimes they really get people "fired up". It's just a preference after all, there truly isn't a "right answer". People go with what they like. That being said . . . . wait for it . . . .

Gig bags still suck :!:

Oh God not this thread again! Let it die!

Gig bags are NASTY
Yeah yeah I know, "they're lighter" and "I ride my skateboard to practice" and "it's soooooo heavy" and "I'm very careful with my guitar so of course nothing bad will ever happen because someone else is a ding dong" and "blah, blah, blah".

Please buy/use a hardshell case

If you must use a gig bag, get the stiffest one you can. The ones that come with the guitars really are crap.

Don't trust the shoulder straps

Just one opinion:

I hate gig bags. The first thing I did with wy MIM Strat was buy a hardshell.

(this post was no help to you, huh?)

Agree 100%.
I bought my MIM Strat, used, at a small music store.
I really wanted that guitar. It felt wonderful in my hands, like it was made just for ME.
So, I bought a hardshell case for it at the same store.
I had to wait an extra week to take it home (I bought it via a lay-away plan) until I had the money to buy a hardshell case for it. I didn't even want to carry it out of the store until I could carry it out in a hardshell case.

Yeah, HSC'es are heavier than bags, but, as someone here already said, how much do you value your guitar?

I've got hardshells for all my instruments except my bass. It's in a gig bag because it never leaves the house, just sit's in a closet till needed. The gig bag is fine for that.

Mine stay at home as well, but like I mentioned earlier--I still get hardshells for them--maybe I'm crazy, but I prefer hardshells that much.
