I am looking for some tips on cleaning and fret polishing on maple fingerboards. Any input?

It really helps the guitar is stringless when you try to clean the fretboard. Take a soft cloth to start off with and wipe in between frets, and then really scrub next to the fret bars (where a lot of grime builds). It should look and feel a whole lot better afterwards, and if that's not enough, go to a music store and ask about what you could use to get it all "sparkly glowy". Good luck

I've used 0000 steel wool to polish up frets (masking off the pickups so that the steel bits don't get attached to the magnets and being careful not to scratch up the wood).

+1 Scotchbrite (3M) pads also.

I use household silver polish. That is a metal polish with a particularly mild cut, so it just shines the metal more than smoothing it. Always go light, though. Rubbing of any kind whatsoever will wear the frets to some tiny degree.

BTW: yet another Stewart-MacDonald product (I honestly have no affiliation with that company - though I'm wide open to inducements... ). I find these little fingerboard guards absurdly handy for minor fret work, to avoid needing to mask the wood. For some reason I particularly hate having to mask up necks - so tedious:
