Hi Everyone,
I've been in the market for a new strat for quite awhile. I currently have a 2002 highway 1 strat, which I bought it 2nd hand. Its really starting to have some issues. I was thinking about trading her for a new strat. I first thought about the 60's Classic Players or a Robert Cray MIM. For the price they seem to be pretty good. I keep feeling that I should go with an American Standard strat instead. If so, what is the tonal differences (in your opinions - all opinions welcome) between the 07's and the 08's?
my local shop has a couple of 2007's leftover.

Also, is their really a big difference between the 60's classic players and the Amer Standards/ do the upgraded parts make that much of a difference?

IN MY OPINION, I would go with the '07. I've got an '06 (not much different) and I went to play an '08, and I was not as pleased with it. I don't think that is was luck of the draw, but certainly go and play both to see which one you like more.

Hello Pklrlo,

On the other hand I like the 2008
bent steel bridge saddles and a
thinner finish along with a nicer neck
is what did it for me.

Cheers.

The 08s also have the stellar new case, right?

The '08 has: new molded case, nicer neck, copper infused block, and bent steel bridge saddles. Now, aside from the case and the neck, I'm too much of a noob to really notice the difference in the block and bent steel bridge saddles. However, I played both side by side and was much more impressed with the '08.

You should really play them both to see which you like the best. I did and in my humble opinion I thought the '08 carried the day. YMMV.

Hi pklrlo

I have a/b in store 07 vs 08 and found that both feel equally nice and with shiny fret board (maple) 08 looks more expensive. I did not notice any difference in tone between the two. Fender advertises all the new appointments as an upgrades from 07 and past models. However if they give you a great deal on the new old stock, you can't go wrong with 07.

I've played both myself and I can't get a read on the differences between them. I only have a Guitar Center to try them out and its so noisy its really hard to hear the subtle differences. I hate shopping there but my options are limited when it comes to in-stock guitars. The other shops in town don't carry much.

I've seen an 08, very nice too, but never played one, but I did buy an 07 just last month, it was the last one in the shop, the salesman knocked off £100, all I can say is this is one of the best guitars I've ever owned, being my first strat I suppose I'm being slightly bias, it plays like a dream, sounds awesome, low action, no buzz or choking, throw it down the stairs and it stays in tune !! (just kidding, as if !! ) workmanship; spot on, no issues whatsoever, I love it to bits, so I have to say 'go get an 07', probably be slightly cheaper than an 08, but thats just my opinion FRANK

Hi, I own a 2004 American series and recently bought a 2008 American standard so have had some time to compare the two. Firstly i'd say without doubt that the new American standard has more sustain, probably due to the different saddles and the copper infused block and maybe due to the thinner finish on the body. That said the American series is still a great guitar, has a better paint job, plays just as well as the new one and there are some bargains out there if you shop around. The bottom line is they are fundamentaly the same guitar with subtle changes. I personally would go for the new model simply for the extra sustain (though this could change from guitar to guitar) and because i prefer the return to the vintage style bent steel saddles.

Thanks Everybody. I actually bit the bullet and purchased my new axe. I went with the 50's Classic Players Strat. I got a pretty good price for a new guitar at $699 instead of $799. Mostly, I liked the V shaped neck much better than the C shape. The tremolo system on the 50's CP sold me along with the neck. The sucker stayed in tune with considerable use. if I'm correct its the customs shop tremolo. They didn't have the color I wanted (2 tone sunburst) so its on order. The Gold color was OK, but not my style.

I'm confused, I thought the conversation was about the 07 and 08 American Standards. I must have missed something! :?

It was, but I asked about the Classic players series strats vs the american strats as well in the first post. Noone really said anything about them. Once I tried the V neck I had to look at a much more expensive american series guitar - American Deluxe I think to get the same feel. The price is just way too high for me. I was stretching to pay for an American standard to start. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to the American strat.

My fault for not paying attention. That is still a great guitar you bought. You'll love it I'm sure! Enjoy!
