Anyone trade their american standard in for a deluxe? I am still within my 30 day window for returning my american standard and getting the deluxe ash. I like the butterscotch blonde with the maple neck. I like the idea of the S-1 system, and the noiseless pickups. Also, is the ash that much lighter? that would be a huge plus. Has anyone done this? How did it turn out?

Thanks,
Erik

The Deluxe has certain top end advantages. Many people here like those pickups a lot. The staggered locking tuners are the nicest on the market, in my humble view. Not essential, but very handy. Personally, I think the abalone dots look particularly nice on a maple fingerboard - a subtle touch of glamour. And the workmanship is the best that Fender has to offer, short of the Custom Shop.

On the other hand, I have the S1 Switch on an Am Series HSS (which gives the greatest number of options). Frankly, I've ended up only using one setting on it with the switch engaged, position three (all pickups full on), and even that only sparingly. The switch is not a reason not to buy the guitar (you don't have to use it, after all), but then again, to my own taste it is not especially a reason to go after a Deluxe either.

At any rate, having it might cure you of wondering whether you're missing out on essential sounds with some of these combinations of series/parallel pickup wiring: you're not.

The Duluxe is the tops if you can run to it: but an American Standard is by no means merely a substitute - a very fine guitar if you decide to stay with that one.

Cheers - C
