Here's a really interesting article about the design of the Stratocaster and its implications on business and manufacturing:

What We Can Learn From the Fender Stratocaster by Wayne Greenwood

http://www.cooper.com/journal/2001/08/what_we_can_learn_from_the_fen.html

I particularly like the discussion of the Strat as a platform. Enjoy!

Very illuminating. Thank you for sharing that.
Glad that people are starting to appreciate on an intellectual level what most of us already know deep down inside!
BTW, my oldest daughter lives in Bandera....

I always loved the off-beat guitars. I ordered a new Travis Bean (two digit serial #) and played lots of unpopular Rick's and low-end Ibanez.

In the end, I couldn't find anything that got the sound or had the playability of a garden variety Stratocaster. I think the design is competely unmatched.

I am a computer programmer/web developer & a guitar player.
The learning practices, trade skills, work ethics, simplicity, & mind set
happening in Leo's time is completely different from what we see today.

There is much that should be learned from Leo & many other great people from american history.
I agree with that article...

I am also IT programmer/guitar player and in my opinion I would not want to compare IT and guitar building business and practices. Guitars and music are beautiful and it is great that Leo Fender had what it had when he designed the Strat and sold it to masses. In the IT, however the ugly beast hiding in the bottom line. Scientists used to create and innovate nice things in the beginnings of technology. Nowadays software/hardware is made to be obsolete so "they" can buy and upgrade more. The more often the better[more money for "us"]. And after that lets milk some more money by changing how operating system or mission critical system appears to be working on the surface and lets screw programmers to learn yet another programming language that appears to be more organized and easier to use and it is essentially doing the same thing......
Ok rant..... Must go play my Strat to relieve the stress 8)

Illustrating my point exactly.
The reality of IT today (if you think overview of era) is that 'standards' today are flimsy at best.
(An example might be to study the history of a language such as php.)
The resulting human perspective, action, & reaction is literally virtual insanity (for now).

In general, if people, businesses, corporations etc. would just do the RIGHT thing ie: behave in an ethical and upright manner the world would be in a lot better shape. Do what is right, not what is easiest or most profitable.

People in general have become whores to the "golden collar".
It saddens me

All I can say is that being a metal shredder/classical/jazz player the Strat is definetly my favorite axe that I've ever played and nothing will ever change that. It plays like a dream and responds well to whatever brutal attacks that I may throw it's way...

This article and so many other things reinforce why the Stratocaster has been my #1 choice of guitar for over 40 years.
