Thinking about buying a used strat. Found a '96 for around $700. Is this a decent price for this guitar. Its in great shape. good neck. I just don't know whats considered the good years or the bad years by the folks who really follow guitars. Seems to play reat great on my Fender super sonic.

Does this sound about right price wise? Should I stay away from certain years? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

90's usa made Fenders are as good as new ones. The only years I would possibly avoid are mid 80's, before Fender bought the company back from CBS.

Thanks.

I've been away from playing electric since the early eighties and I'm just getting back into it. My wife bought me the super sonic and a manhatten blue les paul std for x-mas as a surprise and now I'm back hooked.

Cool man. It's nice to bring music back into your life. It relieves much of my daily stress to play my guitar after work.

Any Idea about whether that price sounds ok?

I have a 95 AmStd that I really like...That was the year Fender went to a more old-school look and feel on their Strats, combined with the Delta Tone electronics (which aren't bad) and the newer tremolo and tuner setups (more stable but not as "cool"). I would try to get the price down a bit, though.

A good way of seeing what items are selling for is to goto Ebay & do a search.
Then on the left side bar of the page select the check box that says completed listings.
The items that sold successfully can sometimes help u see what others are actually paying lately.

I have various guitars, and can get pretty much anything I want (within reason). My first choice of any guitar is my 98 MIA strat. I just love the fast satin neck, the sound, the vibe, the feel. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

So yeah, they're great - but make sure it's great FOR YOU. My buddy has a mid 80's MIJ strat that I can't even play. Small fretboard, baseball bat neck, teeny frets, too-low action, etc. But, he plays the hell out of it and loves it. So you should make sure you like it, there's a lot of personal preference there.

Thanks for the help everyone. Looking at the completed listings on ebay helped to give me an idea about about what selling price to expect. It did have the side effect of causing me to lust after so many guitars for sale in one place. wow.

Hell, I may have to back up and rethink my whole idea bout buying a AmStd. There was one or two on ebay that really turned my head.

Thanks again. I thinked I'm hooked on the forum as well.

Please be very carefull & do your research before buying any guitar on ebay.
Especially used... or customized... even claims of authenticity.
We have seen people (experienced or not) in the fender forum only to find
what they bought on eBay was counterfeit (not Fender or FrankenFender)
or maybe 'tampered' with electronics (swapped for lower quality parts or whatever).
Be careful, don't get burned. It can & does definately occur on eBay.

Hate to disapoint but I'm a 45 year old that is just rediscovering electric after about a 23 year sabitical. Kinda just noodled around on acoustic during the interim. I previously owned a '79 strat and played in a couple of bands (just club stuff) through college. As I stated above, my wife surprised me this past christmas with an LP and a Super Sonic combo that has really turned me back own to playing. All that being said I probably won't buy on Ebay. If I can't play it first, I couldn't imagine buying it. But it did open my eyes to what all the options might be as far as strats go. Man there are some great Fender guitars out there. Thanks for the advice. Great forum.

I think that price is high.

What color is it? Are there any replacement parts?

After doing some research online and thanks to you're advice and others, I agree. I went out today and played some of the new models and was blown away with how today's strats play compared with the '79 I once owned. I'm afraid I'm going to spend guite a bit more than I had planned, but I think I have narrowed it down to two guitars. I really liked the feel of the Eric Johnson model even though I think it has a different kind of neck than I'm used to now and I really like the Deluxe with the S-1 switching and scn pickups. Wow. I'm not sure exactly how best to utilize the versitility of that guitar but I think I would enjoy trying to figure it out.

Thanks for your help. orvilleowner!
