Tony has always been my favorite guitar player... I bought a Laney stack in the late eighties in an effort to capture that sabbath sound.

I still have it... a 50 watt AOR head with a 4x12 bottom and a 2x12 top. A great amp and still kicks it out loud and proud.

It sounds very "Deep Purple" with a strat- and very "Sabbathy" with my Les Paul or explorer...

There were guitarists before him that might have used fuzz or sounded somewhat heavy in the fuzz distortion but none have matched his wall of monsterous sound that he started. His sound was to blow buildings down. I also read about the Rock N' Roll Circus film. He played in Tull for a short while is true. He made the plastic caps that went on his finger from cutting white dish detergent soap bottle ends or corners and melting them so that they would fit his fingers. Kind of like molded them after melting them and forming them by putting something in them while still warm and then placed over his fingers to form & fit. I believe in the article it said he used the Strat on the first album on the song Wicked World.

That's what I meant. The early fuzz-toned-distortion didn't sound anywhere as good as Tony's "wall of monsterous sound."

Clapton got a nice warm Marshall distortion going in the mid-sixties. While it was no where near as brutal as Tony's, it was a step in the right direction, for sure.
