Hi, im thinking of buying an Eric Johnson Signature strat because i love the looks and the tone of it. I would have to order it because it is not sold in my local music shop so i cant try it. I was wondering how does the neck feel on it. I have never tried a 12" radius neck before, is it chunky and large because my hands are not the biggest. I have a highway one tele with a modern c-shape 9.5" radius neck and i like it but i wouldnt play anything bigger.

Yes the EJ model has a huge neck on it. I do not have the biggest hands so I prefer the neck on my 62RI strat. I tried a EJ strat at Guitar Denter a few months back and was not all that impressed and could not justify the money for it.

Sorry, I have not played that strat either.
Do they have a Deluxe Players Strat at that local store?
Ya kno the Mexican one:

Maybe this is a really dumb suggestion but that strat has a 12" radius neck on it.
The neck is flatter not nec bigger or wider... I personally did not like that radius.
But maybe it is better on the EJ strat.

I've got an EJ. The radius has nothing to do with how thick the neck is. It's just a measurement of how flat the fretboard is. Bigger number, flatter fretboard. Flatter fretboards makes chording a bit harder, but playing notes and bends a lot easier. Rounder boards it's vice versa. The EJ does not have a huge neck. Certainly not Gibson huge. It has a soft V profile that becomes more C shaped as it nears the body. IMHO, and many others, it's the nicest, stratiest production model strat ever made. I'd put it up against many of the CS models. Custom shop designed pickups. The '54 pickup at the neck is to die for. The '62 pickup in the middle has no tone control and is the only middle pickup I've ever liked on a strat.

Like any other new guitar, it might not feel perfect at first. You have to get used to any guitar, otherwise you'd just be getting the same guitar you've already got. Get it, try it. I bet you'll love it. If not, you can always return it.

The only problem with that is the Deluxe Players has a modern C neck, not the soft V of the EJ. It's not really a good comparison.

Hello Frusciante_power,

+1 on everything Cryinstrat said,
plus the neck is quarter sawn.
It may or maynot have figuring
but it will assuredly be a neck
of the best stability.

Cheers.

I have an EJ. Before I got it I was playing a Strat Plus with a very thin modern C shaped neck. So when I first picked up the EJ it did feel strange and almost "clunky" to me. I'm 5'10" and my hands aren't very big. After only a few days of playing it, however, I was totally used to it and now I very much prefer it to the modern C shape. I seem to be able to play much more accurately and articulately[?] on the EJ. Now I switch between my other strat and the EJ (and my Epiphone Sheridan) and nothing feels strange at all. I think it will only take a few days of playing to acclimate yourself to the different feel.

The EJ is a wonderful guitar.

Tell me about it! My local dealer had an EJ Model with insain figure on the neck and can you believe he jacked the price up to get this.......$3200! I asked him WTF and he said well, I contacted Fender and got this one special order hence the beautifull figure on it. I told this rod that it is standard on that model, (seems as if the red ones have the most figure for some reason) and that price gouging is illegal. I have never heard of calling Fender and asking them to build a custom "signature" modle with a "special" figure on it. BTW, wouldnt that be illegal for Fender to do anyway? I mean they have a contract with EJ and laid down every last detail of his signature model. I would think that if Fender changed anything on it it would be infringment via contract. Needless to say I will never shop there again. I cant stand these hole in the wall guitar dealers. Almost sounds like something Ed Roman would do. The worst part about it? I could go to exoticewoods dot com, order a QS 5A flame maple neck balnk for $51 , send it off to USACustom guitars and have them custom build me a strat neck with a real brazilian rosewood fretboard for $280 that would shame any of Fenders figured necks. Thats right, less than $350 and I would have a figuerd maple neck that would sell on Warmoth for $800 with twice the figure and I get it for more than half the price.

The only reason I know this is becuaase thats exactly what I did. I am having it built right now and I should have it at my door in about a week. Once I get it in I will finish it myself with Nitro and put up some pics on myspace for anyone who is interested in seeing it. I counted on average 6 flames per inch on the neck blank. By standard in order to call flame Maple 5A it has to have a minimum of 3 flame lines per inch. Anything over 5 is considered exhibition grade. Not only is this a god like piece of QS flame Maple but you even get to choose they fretwire size, truss rod,
21/22 frets and whatever your heart desiers for contour.
