ive always wanted a real fender strat. eventually, now that i have a job, ill get one, but im wondering, should i eventually get the american standard or american deluxe strat?
now i love the thought of having the straplocks, s-1 switching, and especially locking tuners, but im unsure about the samarium cobalt noiseless pickups. will they be able to nail all the tones im wanting? right now, im getting a great joe walsh type tone, with just my old squier (i play a marshall jtm-30 tube combo) so im wanting those great tones, plus im wanting to play some frusciante, hendrix, stevie ray vaughan, david gilmour,
robin trower, pete townshend, and like lynyrd skynyrd and rolling stones tones, but id also like some iron maiden type tones, but im wondering, are the pickups on the regular american standard strat better for these tones?

Well,I had the same decision to make a few months back and went ahead and got the Deluxe ash strat. You might as well pay the extra few hundred dollars and get the one you can keep for life. As far as the SCN pups and S-1 switching it will take time and experimentation but you will find that you will be able to get any sound you are looking for. Just my opinion . 8)

Those are actually a lot of different tones you are citing, created using many different types of pickups. And some of those players got different sounds at different periods using different gear, over the years. For instance, I love The Who: most of Pete's "classic" sounds were not even done on Strats. And we haven't started to talk about amps...

You are simply not going to nail all of that precisely with one set of pickups.

An American Standard Strat is an excellent choice and will serve you very well to get close-ish to much of what you mention. As a working guitar it can't be beat - except perhaps by a Deluxe. If you like the appointments on that one, and can afford it, I'd go for it if I were you. And those Samariums are not Fender's premier pickups for nothing - but neither they nor any other pickup is going to cover all your bases.

I have a strange feeling that wasn't really the helpful answer you were looking for, was it...?

Sorry - C

You are correct again Ceri! A lot of their sound they are looking for will come from amps/ fx pedals, etc.

I went with the Deluxe also. I didn't A/B with a regular Strat, and don't know if my noob ears would be able to tell much of a diff - or that one was "more right" anyway. The guy that helped me did say the SCN's "have the same sound, just with no noise". I did know the deluxe sounded great!

Obviously the use of cobalt magnets makes a diiference, as alnico supposedly adds to the tone, but I prefer "noiseless" instead of trying to nitpik different tones...I like to think they would have gotten them as close as possible to be successful.

Besides, the extra features on the deluxe gave me...a bit more - more to tinker with and more tone options w/the s-1, better tuners, etc.

SCN's are great, theres no traditional strat sound you cant emulate with em if you adjust the EQ on your very nice amp. In my experience you need to do that when switching guitars anyway. Even if 2 guitars are identical they wont sound the same. SCN's are worth every bit of their particular slant on strat sound simply because their so quiet.

Only other thing I considered when making a similar choice was that the Deluxe "may" be due an update? Next year? Who knows.

I would hope that a Deluxe would be a life-long guitar for me if I bought one, and I tried a few, and loved every one of them.

But maybe because I'm used to buying top of the range sportsbikes that get updated every 2 years by the Japanese manufacturers, I really really could not stand to buy possibly the nicest guitar I'll ever buy, to find out that in 5 months, Fender will make it nicer/better. (In the same way I couldnt buy a Japanese litre bike in its second year of production knowing the new version was out soon!! Sad but true)

I have an American Standard on the way. I couldnt fault them for what I needed, and the "extras" on a deluxe dont mean a great deal to me. But that doesnt really matter as the $$$ diff isnt THAT much.

At heart, I think I'd buy a deluxe to cuddle it, stroke it and treat it with respect and so am happy to wait for the right time to buy it.
The Standard is no less a player for a man of my abilities, so I bought one of those now, to be used, abused, and possibly modded.

Its an almost impossible choice. But a choice where either decision is correct!!

update and improvement dont always go hand in hand. The vintage markets current strength is the proof of that.

You might be able to nail a lot of different sounds using a HSS strat and a multichannel amp. Set up one channel for a good heavy humbucker sound and another channel for a good straty sound with the neck single coil pickup.

i know that theyre very different tones, its just ive heard some people say stuff about the SCN pickups being more claptonish, when im wanting more classic SRV-ish tones. and when i say pete townshend, i mean like his modern fender tones, not his 60s gibson tones.
as for the humbucker tones, ive already got a les paul, so i just need a deluxe strat to round out my collection :D
