I have a MIM Stratocaster that is puzzling me. I have used this forum to try to identify the model to no avail, but I will ask for some more help. Bear with me!!
I purchased a used 1996-97 Fender Fat Strat and have no info as to the model. It has a strange set of specs.
I also have a stock 2001-02 MIM Strat in 3 tone sunburst for comparison.Image
Headstock; 2001 has a silver/black Fender logo where the 1996 has a vintage style gold spaghetti logo.
2001 has serial # and MIM under Fender logo. 1996 has that info on back of headstock.
2001 has Fender/Ping tuners whereas the 1996 has vintage tuners.
2001 has medium frets, 1996 has med/jumbo frets. This is weird cuz all the other components point to "vintage" tho the frets are med/jumbo and as far as I can tell, original to the neck(no re-fret job)
2001 has maple neck of standard dimensions; 1996 has tinted honey colored neck with slightly larger dimensions, wider and fatter.
I have removed the neck on the 1996, and everything is stock Fender, neck and body.
2001 has 3 tone sunburst, 1996 has dark red sparkle which I have never seen before on a Fender.
I know Fender has made some special guitars(FSR), but I don't know what my 1996 is. It is not a huge deal, but a mystery is always a challenge.

Hmm: interesting. I don't know the answer, though that finish is ringing some kind of distant bell in my mind... I wonder if anyone has a catalogue from that period?

I wouldn't place too much importance on what you are saying appears to be a confusing vintage/modern mix. Judging only by your photo I don't think that is a honey finish you have on the neck there. I think it is probably just a regular clear polyurethane that has darkened naturally a little over 12 years. Honey finish is much darker, in my experience - wouldn't you say?

I like those tuners - but I can't remember what was normal on MIMs at that time...

Waiting to see what others have to say.

Cheers - C
