I just did my first guitar mod, ever (been playing 40 years). Put on a pre-wired Dimarzio pickguard with the "area" pickups (a 58 at neck, 67 middle, and 61 at bridge).

I've read so many posts about upgrading pickups and always wondered if the change would be very noticeable to me. This upgrade on my 1996 American Standard has made it like a new guitar and was a snap cuz it's all prewired. Noiseless too.

Also noticed that the staggered pole pieces keep the strings all at about the same volume...that made a bigger difference than I figured...just seemed to clean up my playing. And, there's much less volume difference from pickup to pickup than with the stock setup.

I hoped (and figured) that Dimarzio would do a good job of choosing the right area pickups for the various positions, as well as use good pots.
Wow. Not only do I LOVE the sound (even the middle pickup that I used to pretty much only use combined with neck or bridge) but the pots are great. I can roll off the volume without it going muddy...it just cleans up the grunge on my tiny terror. Now I actually USE the volume control. Ditto for the tone pots. The fender pots rolled off too many highs too fast, but these are very linear and are much more usable.

Pickups are a smidge hotter than stock. I can get clean, but they want to break up earlier (and I pretty much never play totally clean). Not a metal pickup by any means, but for classic rock and blues....woohoo.

Sorry if I sound like a Dimazio ad, but I'm waaaay pleased with this upgrade.

Small gripe is that the pots posts are a little taller than Fender stock, so the knobs sit up a little off the pickguard. Would be easy enough to slip washers between the pots and the pickguard to fix it or just get used to it like I did.

Can you tell I'm a happy camper? The stock setup through my Tiny Terror with an Eminence Alnico Red Fang made me drool, but this is like the turbo version. NOW I know why so many players upgrade.

Lastly, I like the way this came as a package and I didn't have to think at all about whether I was using the pots and capacitors that would work best with the pickups. Piece of cake. Plus, I can sell the old, complete setup on Ebay.

I have been seriously considering changing the pickups in my 2008 telecaster and my 62 reissue strat. DiMarzio has a lot of pickups to choose from. I just can not decide which ones would suit me best. However me policy has always been; if its not broke, dont fix it.

Have the area 58 in neck and middle with the 61 in the bridge.
I love it, but I never get quite enough quack in the neck+middle position (plenty in mid+bridge).
How about your setup with the 67 in the middle?
The 67 is more midrangy right?

For the money,

The Dimarzio FS(fat strat)-1 has a great edgy tone; hi output as well.

The Seymour Duncan (if you can find 1) BJ2 is a single coil spaced/stacked h'bucker. REALLY gets out there.

I didn't catch what kind of guitar you modded. What is it?

to Eddie Bowers...Seems to have plenty of quack in both bridge with middle and neck with middle. I can't really say if the 67 is more mid-rangy...I guess the fact that I'm evaluating the pickups in three different positions on the guitar makes it tricky for me to tell. Don't we all wish it was easier to try pickups out in the various positions?

I'll take a close listen when I fire up my guitar tomorrow and let you know if I can identify the difference.

another happy dimarzio user here, love their variety & tone for pickups. Especially for Strats!

I should just leave mine alone since it's close to perfection, but I can't help but wonder what the 67 would sound like in the middle :)
