secondhand marshall jcm. get a 50watt too.
or get a podv2 and a decent poweramp and 4x12. If you bide your time you could get em all for around the £250/$500 mark.
I've only ever gigged with one new amp, and its the one that let me down. Not that old amps are any better, but if its old and used you know it survived for a reason. :D

If you are talking tube amps, there's not going to be a real difference. A good 30 to 40 watt tube amp will take care of most situations. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe (40 watts) and a Crate V33H (30 watts), and both are great although neither are high gain amps. The Fender is the better amp (although the More Drive is pretty much useless) and it takes pedals quite well. You can get used amps under your price range.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I'll make a plug for the Peavey Classic 30. It's the only tube amp I've ever owned, and it's held up great for me over the years. I love the tones I can get out of it with my Strat. The overdrive channel gets nice and gritty when you turn it up, and it's also incredibly loud - I don't think I've ever cranked it up past 4.

I think I've heard people say that with solid state amps, if the amp is 30 watts, it's 30 watts...but with tube amps 30 watts is more like 50.

New ones sell for $599, but you could easily find a used one for half that.

I believe they also make a Classic 50. Not sure how much that one is though.

That's a very good question. Also, are you talking 65 tube watts or 65 solid state watts? There's a difference. 65 tube watts is quite powerful, too loud to crank at almost any gig. Most people these days are using 30 to 50 watt amps.

Ya, Crate seems OK.
Right now they seem to be cheap too, you can get a 50 watt tube (6L6 power tubes) combo for about 200$

And a 2*12 extension cabinet for 120$

They don't seem to be bad amps in the music stores, don't know why they are so cheap.
Maybe the pre-amp is solid state, not sure.

Before choosing an amp, you need to decide what 'kind' of tone you want to represent your playing.

Stevie Ray Vaughn has a 'kind' on tone.

Mark Knophler has a 'kind' of tone.

Yngwie Malmsteen has a 'kind' of tone.

Unfortunately, no amp will do all those tones well, so once you pick a 'kind' you can then zero-in on which amp will give you the best for your tone. Amps are very different and I've seen lots of players get bummed-out and sell their guitars because they are not happy with the tone - when all along it really was the amp they were not happy with.

A used Marshall JCM 800 would do the trick!

I played the Fender Blues Jr. today. Great little box, and sounds awesome for bends, vibratos and tremolos. For under 500 clams, it would shake the walls of my house. I could always upgrade with a VOX tonelab later on. I like their models.

The Line 6 Spider Valve 112 has 40 Watts and is about $699. Says it combines the best of modeling with a authentic tube amp. I've never heard it played outside a store, but its worth a look.

I just played that amp today at lunch and was VERY impressed. Had GC basically to myself so not much other noise to compete with it. Amazing array of models (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's) at the flick of a switch. Built in tuner. Obviously played for just a few minutes so I really couldn't put it through its paces but it sounded awesome to my ears.

them line6/bogner amps have interested me for quite a while now. The only problem with em being that you need to spend a good week or 2 with em. All the preset sounds seem geared up to sound great in a shop but get em home and they require re-eq'ing to suit a different room size. One amp i'm really impressed with is my fender vibrochamp xd. I've 2 jcm 800's that are way too powerfull for home, tried the vibrochamp out on a whim, and bought it. 5 watts and it never goes past 3 on the volume control  . Amazing sound too, the current idea of solidstate pre-amp and valve power-amp seems a lot better than the old solidstate power-amp and 1 valve in the pre-amp setup of years gone by.

Carvin amps absolutely ROCK.
Metal try the V3 or the Vai Legacy amps.
Blues and Classic Rock go with the Bel Air 212
Heavy Rock try the X100B
