David

the main point of the post is to determine who likes their old mex guitar neck and wouldnt be without it. No one is saying its better than a usa neck. The main thrust of the original post was the word 'old', as in 'played in'. I for one am more comfortable with my mexi neck. Not because its better, it isnt. I simply feel more at home with it than i do with my 57hotrod, mainly because of the 13 years i've owned and played it for. Hand rolled edges, its got em the real way, by my hands. Meticulous fretwork, its got that too. Its nearly fretless and the dreaded time of re-fret is rolling round again. Superb neck to body angle and its super straight without any fretout or buzz issues. Also i'm not scared of dropping it either.
I hasten to add it didnt come from the factory in such condition, they never do.
In 13 years time i hope my hotrod neck is better and more comfortable, all things being equal it should be.

Your completely correct that a bad setup can make a superb guitar play like crap, and visa versa crap guitar play great. O.k i cant remember the last time i got a cheap guitar that played great straight out the box, I realy believe its what you pay fmic usa prices for, 'open the case and gig with it'. my 57hotrod came that way and required very little tinkering to get it to suit my nuances, i think it took me half a hour and i haven't had to look at it since. Even the neck relief is still the same as when i bought it. Thats the quality difference. 13years for the cheapie to play great and half a hour for the great one to play great. :)

Ceri,
the extreme music was for the band (which i quit awhile back). What i play for myself is something entirely different. You cant just thrash powerchords and widdle up and down a fretboard whilst avoiding anykind of real melody all the time and call it productive composition. Its fun once in a while and i do enjoy it. I just dont think its the be all and end all of guitar playing. On any given weeknight your likely to find me in the kitchen jamming to big band swing stuff on radio2 :D
suss the song before it finishes, its great listening/ear practice, and you never know whats coming next. :)

Well, get outta here - that's great, man! I've been discovering new and impressive dimensions to you ever since the first thread you posted on. (When, if you recall, I mistook you for a beginner and advised accordingly. Soon learnt better on that!)

Keep swingin', guy - C

I mentioned it elswhere on this site, but all MIM necks are actually made in the Corona California factory. This could be why everyone likes them so much.

That hasn't been true for a couple of years now. The Mexican factory has full neck making capability. I don't have the link handy, but Google "Fender Factory Tour" and you can find photo evidence.

Here you go. Check out this 2006 photo-factory-tour of both the Ensenada and Corona factories. In the first set of photos from Ensenada, you will see the Mexican Neck Factory, where the necks are crafted from raw blanks.

I just got an 95 MIM strat and I love the neck. It kind of reminded me of late 80s MIJ.

I also have an 01 MIM neck that I kind of like, but it seems tad too skinny towards the nut. I tried an 05 MIM and the thing drove me up the wall, especially at the nut (seemed like it just bore into my fore finger joint by my hand when playing it). I was really surprised by the difference between the 01 and 05 necks. Even the quality of the rosewood was a lot lower than the 01. Maybe the 05 I tried was just one of those done on Monday necks.

Like several others have mentioned, the mid 90s MIM stuff gets a big thumbs up from me.

Is it possible that some necks might have trickled in from CA to help out after the fire (I read about) that happened in the Mexico factory in the mid 90s?

I played a new MIA Telecaster today where the fret edge almost cut my thumb. Its neck paled in comparison to my MIM Strat. That is far from the norm. I agree with you, though -- those "made on Monday" gits are out there from time to time.

Your old necks are 'played in'. I think the only way to find a neck to compare to a good old one that you've played for the last 7 odd years, is to go to the custom shop. I dont think their going to hit the nail completely on the head though. Then again my custom shop experience is very limited.

How do you remove the nut that comes with the Strat and install the new grahite nut? Or is that something that's better left up to a luthier?

I have both the Mex Strat and an American Deluxe Strat. Both are very easy for me to play. But I actually like the feel of the American Deluxe better. Guess it's all personal.

Its not as hard as it seems. I cut across where the fretboard and nut meet with a scalpel, then gently tapped the nut out with a punch and a small hammer (toffee hammer). When its out check and if need be clean the inside of the nut slot.

for instalation i followed this
http://www.earvana.com/EarvanaInstallation1.pdf

was very easy. :D

What do you mean your guitar is out of tune worst now that you've installed the Earvana nut?
