I have heard that the new american standards have floating tremolos.
Is this true and if so what are they?

Thanks

It's not just on the new american standards of 2008 only.
Floating trem is morre in general than that.

Let me explain. Look at the pic below.
The blue line is a spring & of course the red line is your strings.

Notice how the tremolo is "floating" between string tension & spring tension.

Or to put it into words, a floating trem is when the whole base plate is raised above the surface of the body, which allows it to pivot in both directions. This allows you to bend the notes up as well as down.

A non-floating trem sits flush to the wood when at rest. You can bend the notes down but not up. That's the way tremolos were originally set up by Fender for the first few decades of the Strat's existence, so it tends to have "vintage" connotations. Floating the trem was a player modification that guitar makers gradually cottoned on to.

Two-point trems almost always come from the factory set up to float. Six-screw trems often come set up flush, but can also be raised to float.

Any help?

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri, well said.

Also a floating tremolo can be blocked or locked so that it is like a 'fixed bridge'.
There are several posts about this subject that can be searched here in the fender forum.

Here's one:

Nice image, bss. That should explain the difference between "flush" and "floating," but I've never seen that third (bottom) case! I think that guy has trouble!

I've got a question re: floating trems. If you don't plan on using it should you leave the sticker covering the hole? She you put the trem in anyway to make sure the spring stays put? Thanks for the advice and I don't mean to hijack the thread.

If you want the spring to stay in the hole, then the sticker is a good idea.

If you move the case around without the sticker on the hole, the spring can come out and scratch up the finish (by getting squished between the case and the body).
