First off, just Google stratocaster pickups and you'll get more options then you can deal with. Try Seymour Duncan's site.

As for your second question:

There's so many variations for the Strat bridge position that it can actually confuse you, but you'll see the ones that are available that are for a more distortion or powerful type of sound for metal or a more regular PAF sound in a single coil replacement size for the bridge. Go to Dimarzio.com Making up your mind is somewhat confusing but if your looking for the most distortion I would say the Super Distortion model in the single coil replacement size.

besides the usual single coils and humbuckers, you have the p-90's which sit kind of in the middle. they are a little more snappy than a humbucker but have the grind of the humbuckers.

+1 -- Also consider Fender, too. They make a bunch of great pickups.

Other than humbuckers and single-coils? I imagine you are thinking of Hotrails. Mostly they come from Seymour Duncan, though others such as Kent Armstrong make more affordable versions of them.

There's also mini-humbuckers made to the shape of single-coil pickups and so easily interchanged - again, Kent Armstrong (at WD Music's websites) is one place to look for those.

Also, active EMGs and passive Lace Sensors offer other single-coil sized pickups that give different sounds. (There is a thread running right now about Sensors that you might want to look at.)

P90s would be another unusual way to go, but you'd need a custom made pickguard and perhaps some re-routing of the timber underneath to fit them. No rules - but it is a less obvious way to go.

For retailers: I imagine that Australia, like most countries, has its own version of Google. Just type "Fender Standard HSS Stratocaster" into that and you'll likely get more shops than you know what to do with.

Howzat?

Cheers - C

The minihumbuckers (like you find on Gibson Firebirds) or P-90s would work just fine on a Strat. You just have to make sure your routing can accomodate them and then buy a Custom made pickguard.
