To get a PAF or metal sound what is the most best or powerful single coil sized pickup could you put in the bridge section of the Strat to give a powerful Gibson PAF or metal sound?

The single-coils they put on the Gibson Melody Makers in the 60's were magical. I own an original Melody Maker from 61 and it literally is PERFECT to get that Pantera-Dimebag-tone.

So, if you can maybe get your mitts on a Gibson-Melody-Maker-style pickup, you might get something nice. But don't forget to try out some soapbars too, I haven't, but you never know, life can be crazy like that.

Yeah but talking a real power pickup one that sounds like a Gibson humbucker that can be single coil size to be put in the bridge section that has that type of sound.

Gibson PAFs are not the same as metal pickups. The only thing they have in common is that they are not classic Strat pickups.

Go to:
www.dimarzio.com and check the hum canceling Strat pickups line.
www.seymourduncan.com - a lot of options, Hot Rails (I love them), JB Jr., new active Strat pickups (Blackouts) and probably a few more.
www.emginc.com - active pickups.
Kent Armstrong, Guitar Fetish, Bill Lawrence might also have some solutions (they are priced lower then the above mentioned so that's also a plus I guess).

Good luck!

I would have to agree with the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. I had them in 2 different strats that I had, both maple and rosewood necks. They sound awesome. Not to bad clean wise even. Dave Murray from Iron Maiden uses them in all 3 positions and if you listen to their live stuff he gets some pretty darn good cleans on Hallowed Be Thy Name and other clean parts.

I remember seeing the Smithereens in concert and Pat Di Nizio had a Strat and it sounded as powerful as a Gibson SG and I think he might have a Bill Lawrence pickup in the bridge position. Anyone know about this? Also has anyone had any experience with a Bill Lawrence pickup installed in their bridge position?

If you're trying to get a gibson les paul sound from a stratocaster you might as well buy an actual gibson les paul. You won't be able to get the sound of a gibson les paul just by changing the bridge pickup. The wood, scale, and body type are all completely different and it's going to affect the sound more significantly then a pickup. If you can't afford a gibson just get an epiphone, that's my opinion anyway.

I noticed that DiMarzio make a single coil sized Super Distortion and a Fast Track 2 pickup for the Strat bridge position which resembles that same Super Distortion sound of their regular sized humbuckers.

If you want a hot single coil, look for a Fender Hot Noiseless or an Alnico III pickup from a Highway One on eBay.

Funny no one's mentioned P90's. They run a lot hotter then strat styled single coils.

The Diamrzio FS-1 works great in the bridge position.

Seymour Duncan used to make a BJ-2 single coil/stacked h'bucker the output was like 15-17 kohms. Buy 1 if you can find a used 1 I did.

Also, Dimarzio mace the X2N humbucker that topped out at 17-19 kohms.

Yeah, but it's not really that hot. It is way overwound, but the term "Fat" really describes it. I guess the magnets aren't as hot as, say, the DiMarzio SDS-1 pickup.

Of course, the original poster will probably discover that hot pickups really aren't that useful (mainly because they don't clean up).
