If the authentic SSS or 3 single coil authenticity of the Strat doesn't bother you with a humbucker pickup on there I'd say yeah that would be a good way to go since you'll be getting a humbersound for metal.

There are a few things you can do. If you want a great starter guitar you should get the American Standard Stratocaster with the Floyd Rose Tremelo upgrade. It comes with a HSS design; however, if you are looking for that "Maden" sound, you want make some modifications. I recommend replacing the bridge pups with Dimarzio Super Distortion DP100 pickups. This is the same pups Maiden's lead guitarist uses in his Strat. I personally have the Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster. This guitar costs a little more up front...but mine rocks. I have a SSS configuration (no upgrades), play through a Crate DSP 60 watt amp, and I use a Boss Eq (EV7) and Metal Zone (MT2) pedals. I can get sounds ranging from Black Sabbath to Metallica and everything in between. Play every guitar in the store through an amp similar to yours, find one that sounds good, and buy it. The rest will fall into place.

whoa... you are willing to blow 1 grand for a starter guitar??? Cool i wish i could do that :) I don't think the HSS american has a fat enough sound for metal. Maybe the mahogany special strat or highway one hss. Definitely upgrade your hb's to a dimarzio or a duncan. Although don't ask if you should not get a strat on a strat forum :D OF course get a fender! They're cheaper and still retain high quality. You can't go wrong with an american made. Some people don't like strats, and that's cause they're not using them right!!

The (MIM) Mexican Strat, and for metal get the HSS or put in the Dimarzio Super Distortion or put a Seymour Duncan in the bridge for a hotter sound!

Hey on that DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup, what does regular or F spacing mean?

Thanks!

Fender Japan has put out TWO Iron Maiden strats!

Currently, there's a Dave Murray (google HST-57DM to see one at a Japanese website).

Or check out this older thread:

H/S/S Amr. Stds. are sorta weak sounding, I've played one and compared it to my S/S/S Strat...doesn't compare, even for metal.

And yes, I do use single-coil pickups for metal, thank you very much. 8)

What kind of effects are you using to get the metal sound with single coils?

I like to work through a clean channel with a Digitech "Grunge" pedal (since my G-DEC Jr.'s driven effects are THAT bad). The bridge itself is too bright to use extensively, but the bridge/middle can get a bit of that thrash-sound.

Fender brand of amp, cheap. Its like the G-DEC but not so "digital" as its more-upgraded counterpart.

On that "F" spacing question. I researched it and I found it at this link: http://www.dimarzio.com/site/#/faq/
Hope this helps. Basically if you have a Fender or use a Floyd Rose Tremelo, your guitar utilizes F spacing.

My first guitar was a Squire HMIII. Completely hot rodded, the works. It was my main guitar until the neck was crashed 10 years later. I liked that guitar so much I replaced the neck and continued to play it for another 6 years. I finally decided it was time for a True Fender. I played every guitar in the store (BC Rich, Ibanez, Gretch, Gibson). Really liked the Gibson (did not have $2300). For the amount of money I had to spend I decided on the Fender HWY1. If you have the cash, go Fender Stratocaster MIA. If you have less than $500, go with the American Standard (MIM) upgrade model with the Floyd Rose. As I mentioned, I recommend to play all the guitars in the store until you find one that is comfortable, easy to play, and sounds the best with the amp and/or effects you usually play on. IF you are a completey new to guitars...the best amps are Marshall, Crate, Vox, LIne 6. If you are going to want to keep up with a garage band, get at least a 60 watt amp or higher. Once an amp and effects are picked out, then look at Guitars. If you are going to join a band any time soon, G et a 15 watt practice amp...Same models as above. I recommend a good distortion pedal either Boss or Digitek (no offence to anyone who likes another brand). I personnaly play with a Boss Metal Zone 2 (MT2) for distortion and a few other effect pedals. I own a Crate 60 watt DSP amp. It's sounds good to me. 8)
