I'm putting Ernie Ball 10 though 52s on my USA strat. I've used 9s in the past but wanted a little beefier tone. The 52 gauge string is pretty thick and doesn't seem to sit in the nut of my strat as far as they did in my les paul. How can I tell if the strings are fitting properly in the nut? Is there a rule of thumb such as they should be completely in the nut, half way in, etc?

Thank you.

if the strings pop out during playing then you have a problem you must deal with one way or another. why use 10's thru 52? try a set of 10-46 and it probably will be a non-issue.

Be aware changing string gauge may require a new set-up too - different tensions/forces at work.

good point....the bridge and spring tensions will need adjustment as well with the heavier string gauges. best thing is find a good tech, talk to him about the best gauge for what you want to accomplish, your playing style, etc, and let him set the guitar up for you....more than worth the 50-75 bucks!

By technical standards they say that the string's half diameter should be sitting in the nut.

Be careful on the large strings, because I put bigger strings on once without filing out the groove in the nut enough and the nut cracked and had to be replaced.

You should also be able to feel whether the string moves freely through the nut or not. Binding nuts are probably the no. 1 reason for tuning problems.

I really believe that is true. I wonder how many sets of new tuning keys have been installed because the owner heard that "ping" of the string finally releasing from a bound nut and thought the tuners were slipping.

I went to .10 to .52 on one of my strats from .09's and had to widen the groves on a few of the strings. I also gave the nut grooves a dose of #2 pencil lead and it has been fine. Chords sound great on the heavier strings and I can still bend them as needed. (I also reintonated the instrument.)
