I recently purchased a American Deluxe V-Neck w/ SCN pickups. I currently have a number of guitars with Les Pauls as primary. This was my first Strat and it was based on a number of reviews on the wonderfulness of this instrument.

When I got the unit in, the sound from neck to bridge on the pickups was drastically different for each pickup - this is what I am told is normal on this guitar as it should be. But the "level" of the sound is like there is a resistor or something... it's like all the pickups are muted by 30% or so. I have almost no sustain.

So I purchased a American Deluxe HSS to see if that was better. Basically the difference in both the neck and middle position are night and day to the V-Neck, yet they are the same pickups (SCN) with the same 5-way S1 switching system. These pickups in the neck and middle positions don't sound very different from the bridge humbucker pickup. They almost all sound like humbuckers (more like the dual humbucker Les Paul - but a little brighter).

My question is... are these pickups drastically different from one guitar to the next or do you think there is a problem with the V-Neck (like a bad solder or something)? Also, has anybody had any experience with the HSS in the pickup configuration where they all basically sound the same and all sound like humbuckers.

I know this was long - but I am trying to figure out if I want to take a new 1,500.00 guitar and start gutting the electronics or keep returning them until I get that "magic" set of pickups... :)

Thanks!
Robert

See y'all

I told ya' there's a different 'punch' out of a Les Paul with HB's than from a Stratocaster'w SC's.

Perhaps you need to think of your new guitar as having a different voice.....or try a Clapton with the active 25db midboost and see if that rings your chimes.

it sounds like a set up issue on the guitars to me. theres no way there should be a 30% drop in volume between neck and middle pickups. I'd settle for a 10% drop between neck and bridge. I'd try balancing the mid and bridge possitons by lowering the mid and raising the bridge pickup, then balance the neck pickup to the mid pickup. Whilst scn's are essentialy humbuckers they are still very singlecoil like i both tone and behaviour, they respond very much to height adjustment. Humbuckers tend to have a flatter response and height differences dont make too much difference to em. Also on the sustain issue make sure your highest pickup is a minnimum of 5mm from the bottom of the lowest string, it sounds like the magnet is pulling the string to a short stop.

I really dont think this is a solder problem they are nearly always acompanied by excessive noise.

hope you solve it soon
Nik

Does the Vneck have a SSS configuration as compared to the one that has the one with the HSS configuration? Because that might tell you right there if these are 2 separate configurations they might have 2 different tone circuits in them. Pots, capacitors, etc., etc.
