I was just reading an old article about the standard strats getting med/jumbo frets, a better bridge, shielding paint in the body cavities, etc, and the review said that they sounded and played better than the predecessor. Any idea if there's a way to tell from the serial number if mine is before or after the changes?

crap, why did I even have to ask. Mine is MZ7, but the original neck was MZ5 before the skunk stripe "sunk" into the neck. I don't even know why it bugs me when mine is pretty much unbelievable for a sub $400 guitar. I had it set up (extensively!) by a super tech, changed the pickups, and now my instructor who is a world-class player with many guitars actually wants it! But still.....

The 06+ MIM Standards have the following upgrades:
- Larger trem block (the bridge is not changed)
- Med-jumbo frets
- Cavity is shielded

Notes:
1) The big one here is the trem block. Pre-06 MIMs can be cheaply and easily be upgraded to the bigger 06+ trem block. (it is just a couple of screws). I got one off of eBay for $12.
2) My 04 has the smaller frets. I really like them as I preform lots of sliding. The fretwork is actually quite nice, no rough or unfinished spots.
3) Pre-06s can be easily shielded. However, unless your git has excessive humming, I would not worry about it. My 04 has never been a problem with this (it has Tex Mex pups in it)

thanks for the detailed info! My tremolo was blocked off so it doesn't move (sorry, don't know the right terms), so I guess the trem block upgrade is irrelevant? I've only been playing for a few years, so I'm probably not able to appreciate one type of fret over another. I guess I'll stay happy with mine as is!

The purpose of the larger trem block is to provide increased "sustain". Even with a blocked trem, I would bet that the new larger block could help.

My '04 had great sustain when it was bone stock (even with the smaller trem block). So I am not sure how much of a difference the larger block made. But it is such a cheap and easy mod, I think all pre-06 MIMs should be upgraded with the larger trem block. Just my opinion...

thanks, I'll look into that. What, exactly, would I look for if I go the ebay route?
