I am interested in purchasing an upgraded (shielded pickguard, kinman woodstock pickups, graphite saddle) 2003 Highway one strat, do you think I will have any quality control issues?

Noooo! Guitars, especially the Highway One with its nitro finish will sound better over time! Trust me, there is never a too-old level for guitars! If there were, I wouldn't play my 1961 Gibson Melody Maker. :D

5 years old? Hell, she's a youngin. Take good care of her and she'll be around for another 30 or 40.

What is the asking price?

Those Kinman pickups are quite pricey, aren't they?

Are you able to try it out?

I actually prefer the older ones only because of the headstock size. Go for it, you're getting a great guitar.

The current running Highway One in production was introduced 7/2006 according to the fender web site.
I am interested in learning more about the earlier Highway One (I like that headstock better too)
I have been planning on getting a MiM for doing mods,
but maybe the older highway one used would be more ideal.
The other option would be to 'assemble' some parts myself.
(notice I didn't say build or make lol)

Can anyone elaborate on the differences between the earlier version & the current version?

Yes the headstock is very nice. Reflects the 70s.

The early ones (2002-2004) didn't have a reverse wound middle pickup so you got the 60 cycle hum in all positions. I believe they added the Greasebucket(tm) tone circuit, (Rolls Off Highs without Adding Bass) in 2004. The current "upgrade" model first appeared in 2006 with the improvements and the large headstock.

Here are the specs for the original model:

The Highway One™ Stratocaster guitar features the unique Highway One finish—a high-resonance, low-gloss, satin-lacquer topcoat that lets the tone ring out and sustain for days! The Highway One Stratocaster guitar features three classic single-coil pickups, a synchronized tremolo and a maple fingerboard.

I felt at the time there was more to that story than met our eyes. That gentleman displayed remarkable mood swings over a few minutes within a single thread. Raging one moment, charming the next. I got very much the impression of someone trying to cope with a life in turmoil.

Nothing any of us can do about it on an internet forum, except not get involved in angry scenes, try not to be judgemental and hope that supportive influences are at hand in the real world.

I'm ready to be friends with him if he happens to come back: actually, he was nearly always polite with me - even though I don't own a HWY 1 guitar! (People who were there at the time know what I'm talking about...)

It's a particularly friendly forum: let's be nice to each other!

Anyway. Go for that guitar. Can't go wrong with that one, I'd have thought.

Cheers - C
