I've just bought a (MIM) 70's reissue Strat and that's just what it is (reissue)! and keeping everything in it's original 70's authenticity. I mean ey? After all . . . . Why would you buy a reissue and want to do anything to it? Right?

I agree. I love humbuckers, but took one out of my Highway One because it just didn't sound right without the bridge single coil. I love the noiseless pickups though.

Some players might say not to mod is blasphemy...
Pickups can make a big difference on the harmonic qualities in your tone/sound.
And so can the pedals u use...
It all somehow translates to "the feel" u get in your hand & the overall sound in the end...
Both elements can have profound effect on how & what u play.

Its an MiM Strat. I wouldn't dare mod an MiA.

I say MoD whatever you want. Collectors make investments in guitars.
We should be playing them...
Go look at the famous strats that changed the face guitar...
Like SRV or the EVH frankenstrat.
These instruments look like they were used as nuclear experiments.
Which is probably related to the nuclear results these players achieved.
Then again, u don't have to mod, u can just play! there are alot of discoveries in application today.
So we really don't have to reinvent the wheel as players now days.

I am not sure what sound you are looking for exactly.

I'm thinking of modding my Strat, just the bridge pickup though. Thinking of putting a humbucker in there. Looking for something super-hot, like a Gibson-sort pickup. I remember playing a Highway One HSS thinking it sounded beautiful...whats a good pickup to get that sound? Any suggestions? :?

Try a Duncan JB (SH4).

Pick up the Fender Atomic Humbucker, that's the pickup that's in the Highway One. You can get a used one on eBay, I have one on there for sale myself actually if you're interested.

It's a personal preferance kind of thing. Maybe someone likes the look of a specific strat but wants a different sound. There are dozens of reasons why someone would mod a guitar.

Personally I would have reservations doing anything that could not be reversed on a valuable strat (pretty much any USA)..and with any older vintage I would be afriad to touch anything due to the possibility of de-valuing it. I have heard stories where even cutting a wire or soldering can lower value on older ones so why risk it?

As far as MIM or squires to me those are the perfect canveses to go wild with. For example I recently answered a craigslist ad for a free squire..that's right, free..the only issue was it was completly disassembled. But all the parts were in a box and were in decent shape. I noticed the body is factory routed large enough for 3 humbuckers so I am going to break out my air tools and dremel..and mod a pickguard for 3 humbuckers, replace the neck with an older MIM maple, brass nut..better tuners and I should have a nice custom ax.

The reason I prefer humbucks is of course noise reduction..but also like the higher output. I will use coil taps as well so I can at times select a more stock "straty" sound.

So I say go for it, unless it is extremely rare or vintage.

That's the way I understand it. Fender saw players modifying their guitars and began to offer models with some of the more popular mods. The classic example is the HB in the bridge. This may be how the Custom Shop got its start, too but my recollection is hazy.

Correct ,this would explain why Fender keeps coming out with all kinds of different and oddball models. And it does make economic sense from Fenders standpoint. However, I think as far as custom shop it's more about signature series, reproducing vintage models and "relicing" new guitars to look old. And, they are going for BIG bucks.

So someone in my financial situation which would be best classified as "BROKE" can't have one unless we perform a "smash and grab" joking of course lol. So the next best thing is to mod our "el cheapos".

So for example I can take a squier or MIM (all worth anywhere from 100-300 tops average)...bang the body around..sand off 1/2 the finish..install some vintage pickups, a better neck..write "SRV" on it..and there ya go..instant cheap SRV "reissue" lol. Well is that really any more blasphemous then Fender doing it themselves? I think not...everyone deserves to have what they like within their price range...as well if someone likes it original more power to them..personal choice is a good thing.

An analogy could be to try to imagine a world where every vehicle is the same..pretty boring, right? Same if every strat was identical..not a world I would enjoy.

after replacing damn near everything on my MIM strat, instead of buying my next fender, im just going to buy the parts and build my own.

people keep asking me if i bought a "relic" strat cause my maple fret board has been warn down in certain areas. when I say no they ask me how to make it look like that.... play everyday for 3 hours for ten years?

Yep, that will do it. I also find a great way to relic the entire ax is to not use a case and do alot of gigs. And rehersing in tight quarters always puts those lovely cuts it the headstock from hitting the edges of the cymbals.

I modded mine. I put a black single ply pickguard on it, EMG SA's, and a push/pull knob that allows all pickup combinations. I'm going to put a shortened arm on it, and maybe a killswitch button.

Highway One Strat:
-Fender Hot Noiseless (all positions)

Just curious, how different was your tone with those pickups vs. the Highway 1 stock p'ups?

I like the way the stocks ones in my Highway 1 sound now, but the buzzing is pretty bad in the 1/3/5 positions. Thinking about making the switch to a quieter pickup that doesn't stray too far from what I have now.

For the same reason the guys who bought them in the '70s modded them. To get them to play better, etc, with things like Graph Tech saddles and locking tuners, etc.

I think it's a great idea to mod, but only to correct specific problem areas. It's tempting to just throw money at your guitar in the hope that it will make you a better player, but playing is really what makes you better.
