Well I just called Fender and they don't currently make a HSS model in a lefty version. I think what I will do is get a standard lefty for now and if I want to a little later on I'll get a humbucker pickup and pickguard and just get it swapped in. Also I'm curious do you use the same pickguard for a right or left-handed guitar and just use the other side of it or do you need to buy a left-handed one?

The Fender Blues Junior sounds like a good amp and I'm leaning toward it except that I'm a little worried about the bad reviews its gotten for metal. Should I just go for the Blues Junior and get a pedal for metal, and if so which? I'm figuring I'll get the Standard lefty strat and the blues junior for now and then later on when I've been playing for a while I'll get an LP and a Marshall or some other amp that sounds completely different from the Blues Jr so I have two completely different sounds. Thanks yet again.

Edit: I'm also comparing the Blues Junior to the Marshall AVT50HX half stack http://www.zzounds.com/item--MSHAVT50HS

You would need to get a left-hand pickguard, flipping a right-hand pickguard won't work.
For the amp, for home practise I'd really look for a small amp, not a half-stack. The stack won't sound really good until it is cranked up. If metal is what you want to play, don't go for the Blues Jr. As I said already, for versatility get a modeler, such as a Vox Valvetronix or a Line6 Spider.
It seems to me that you are actually more attracted to the Les Paul than to the Strat? Why don't you buy a Les Paul or copy that similarly priced to the Am. Deluxe Strat? A Les Paul Studio can't be too far away. I've also heard that the PRS SE Singlecut is a great guitar.

hey man,

congrats and welcome to the forum...i have been playing regularly for about a year now and i am of the mindset that you should buy the best gear you can afford.

i am not intending on buying things just to trade up later on...to me that defeats the purpose...

i own a les paul and also a '62 reissue in oly white...and i can say without a doubt that it is seriously badass...

to me the reissues are the best guitars and oly white is the prettiest!

there is something to be said about the craftsmanship...and it doesnt hurt that this is the same guitar played by your heroes 40 some odd years ago...i am not a fan of signature models in general...so the reissue was perfect!

the mia standards are serious guitars as well and they come in a variety of ultra-cool colors...getting one would not be a decision you regretted...dont listen to these dudes that say just get a mexican since youre starting off...why?
because they did?

horse manure...playing guitar...rather starting to play guitar can be a very personal thing...if you cant make a connection with your guitar...especially in the beginning...what is going to motivate you to keep playing?

if you get a guitar that you just cant keep your hands off of...all the better.

on a side note in my opinion humbuckers do not belong on strats...lets get real here...
thats why i bought the gibson...those burstbucker pros cant be beat...but musically its a better idea to have the proper tools for the proper sounds...so start diversifying...

on a side note...the princeton reverb is a serious amp as well...and no one is mentioning Orange.
they make kick $@! amps and its not something you see everyday...

i myself just have a champ600 (i dont want to piss off my neighbors just yet...maybe as i get better)
but i ordered a mercury magnetics mod kit...so pretty soon itll blow the doors off!

good luck man...the one thing i can tell you about forums...no one is ever happy with what they got for the most part...they always want to get more or upgrade components on what they got...some even come across as elitist musical snobs...you have to filter out the noise and do whatever the Hell you want!

but for the most part, everyone here is extremely helpful and willing to listen to your questions and weigh in with well thought out responses...its why i keep coming back to this forum daily...

get the strat...save up for the les paul...and dont forget a hollowbody for good measure!

Yeah I like the Les Paul more, but don't want to get a copy (I'm just picky that way) and if I got the LP I'd want to get the Custom which is almost 4x as much as the strat. Also in the end I'd most likely want a strat too so I thought I might as well get the more affordable one first.

For the guitar I'm going with the 2008 lefty Fender Standard Stratocaster in Olympic White with a rosewood fretboard.

For the amp I'm probably now going to get the Vox Valvetronix AD30VT 30w 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp although I'm still looking at the Fender Hot Rod Series Blues Junior NOS 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp as a possibility, but the Vox is less expensive and more versatile so that's what I'll probably go with.

Thanks for all the help! :D

i think that the oly white strat is a great pic...not just cause i have one myself...the one thing i will tell you to look into if it doesnt come with it already is the mint green pickguard and faded plastic knobs and what have you...

to me the white on white strat is a bit sterile looking...the rosewood complements the guitar beautifully and the oly white really starts to get creamy looking when it begins to fade a little (mine sits around on my stand and gets exposed to sunlight alot)

im not purposely trying to fade my guitar...(the nitro laquer reacts to UV light)
its just where i keep it...

its really starting to age well!

i think the look of the mint green pickup guard complements the body beautifully and makes for one stunning instrument...

take a look at the '62 reissue so you can see what im talking about.

good luck and enjoy
(on a side note guitar center makes a les paul vintage mahogany with an unfinished look to it...its a studio and not a custom, but it has the same pickups as the standard (burstbucker pro) and is about 4lbs lighter (no paint job) its about $850 brand new and if you look up reviews on it...ive never seen anything lower than a 9 out of 10. i have owned it for over a year and although id rather lose an arm than my strat...the les paul is still my number one...it has a neck that plays as smooth as better...and you cant beat those growling buckers...just food for thought...)
i have a buddy that loves gibson sg's yet refuses to buy a cheaper model...to him its either a custom or nothing....so i understand if thats how you feel as well but the Les Paul VM's are worth looking into if you want an American Made, no frills fire breathing monster!)

Frankly, if cash ain't an issue then I don't think any of your choices can be faulted. On the Les Paul side in particular there is such a world of difference between a real Gibson and (at least some) Epiphones that if you can run to a Standard or a Custom - do it! And that Strat is a tool that will last you a lifetime without question. You may want to add to it at some point but you'll never need to replace it.

The Vox is a very versatile amp: you are not going to play stadiums with it but as a first toe in the water it is a very good choice, and will introduce you to a range of sounds that will help you decide which way you might want to go in future.

So I'm not at all out to change your mind; but just to offer a further thought on amps in general. Don't be too worried by reviews saying amps like the Blues Junior are not ideal for metal. Straight out of the box, maybe not. But that one in particular gives a really fine core tone, on which you then build by adding a drive/distortion pedal (amongst other things) in front of it. And a useful first place to look amongst those might be DigiTech's Distortion Factory pedal. So happens I have plenty of experience of that one: it gives you seven digital models of famous pedals including some very useful sounds for everything from mild blues to full on metal. Stick one of those in front of a Blues Junior - you've got metal!

One last thought: I also liked the gentleman's suggestion of an Orange amp. Their equivalent, in a way, of the Blues Junior is their Tiny Terror, now available as a combo (no separate speaker to buy). Don't be put off by the lack of knobs: that is a magnificent little amp, ideal for your requirements.

Best of luck - C

Any copy, definitely one of the better ones, would be closer in sound and feel to a Les Paul Custom than a Strat. :) Don't be blinded by brand names and prices, there are some very good LP copies out there. Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield play ESP. I'd rather spend the money on a better amp.

That custom is certainly a beauty! I too have a thing for Ebony.

You MIGHT want to take a look at the Classic, in Ebony. Another sweet looking axe, with hotter open ceramic PUPs then the custom (you did say metal right?), and a much better price ($1650). I had one for a weekend, then swapped it for a Traditional (of course also in Ebony).

The specs are kinda similiar between the Traditional & the custom (both weight relief vs. chambered (Classic), Alnico Pups (57s in the Trad), rounded neck, etc. Just not as fancy.

My local store actually has a used Custom at $2650 - a bit $$$ even for me...though I would certainly be sure to enjoy it!

The Classic has supposedly been just discontinued - hmmm...maybe you can get a deal??
