I recently got my 2008 MIA Strat, and absolutly love it. I decided that I wanted to install the N-Tune on-board chromatic tuner. If you havent seen it before heres the link..

http://www.ntune.com/

Its a pretty neat little tuner and looks factory installed when complete. It requires the removal of the factory volume pot, which is then replaced by a new pull-top style pot. I recieved the tuner from Musician's Friend yesterday afternoon, and decided to start the install. I removed the pickguard and strings and began. It requires you to remove all existing wires from the factory volume pot, and re-solder them to the the new pot. However, it seams that the solder that Fender uses is some pretty high temp stuff. The pencil style 25 watt solder iron wasnt up to the task to remove the numerious ground wires on the pot. I am now in the market for a new solder gun, *sighs* Anyone know what temp or wattage I should get for this job?? I was thnking mabe a 60-80 watt gun would do... :? I guess I will stop by lowes on the way home from work and pick one up. I will post some pictures of the install once I get the gun. :)

Jay

Be careful when you do this. Try to get an inexpensive solder sucker tool and some resin solder flux for the install.

Make absolutely sure surface you wll solder is clean and free from any grease at all.

When applying heat, all you need is enough heat on the surfaces that will receive the solder to let it flow and adhere. Be cautious not to over heat it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Wally.

Truth is I already installed it and the install went smoothly, infact so smoothly I forgot to take pictures. I bought a weller 100/140 watt solder gun, and it did the trick. I am not new to soldering electronics, I fly R/C Helicopters and airplanes. I do quite a bit of soldering there, and the 25 watt pencil iron I had was plenty. It seamed that Fender used very high temp solder when installing thier electronics, which is a good thing I guess. I will post pictures of the finished product when I get home from work tonight. The tuner is accurate and very handy, I would reccomend it highly. I did however find a N-Tune video on youtube that clearly shows the install procdure, if you get stumped. The included manual is plenty capable of assisting you in a clean install. Sorry again guys about the install pics, I may do one on my les paul in the near future, but the pics will be kinda pointless on this forum...

Jay :)

Interesting tuner for sure...
I guess it is not possible to use with an S-1 setup?

They give you a pot to replace yours... so I am guessing u can't.

Interesting, very interesting.

One question, it looks like you had to do some work on the bridge pu mounting screw. Did you file it down or is it an illusion that it appears to be modified?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thank you for bringing up that good point! The kit includes a replacment PU mounting screw. The instalation on some strats require that you use the supplied replacment screw. If the volume control knob is located very close to the PU you may need to replace the screw. To replace the screw is fairly simple.

1. Measure the PU height from the surface of the pickguard to the the top of the PU cover(write it down)

2. Remove the old screw and save it, in the event you decide you'd like to return it to stock.

3. The hole in the pickguard will need to be honed out (countersunk) use a countersinking bit in a power driver. As you are reaming the hole out go slow and insert the screw into the hole a few times as you are drilling, to be sure you dont take out to much material. You can always take out more material, you cant put it back! So go slow and check it with the screw often!

4. Once the hole is reamed to the proper depth insert the new screw and be sure the PU mounting tube below the pickguard is alligned. Begin to tighten the screw. As you tighten the screw measure the PU's height, since you wrote the measurement down in step one theres no guess work.

5. Check the PU height, and be sure its back to stock. Continue with the provided instructions.
