Jimmy has two principle 'bursts, sometimes known as Number 1 and Number 2. There is also a backup replica, Number 3, made by Roger Giffin.

Telling #1 and #2 apart is very difficult, and people argue endlessly about which one was played on which occasion. I'm not even going venture a guess regarding the Song Remains The Same film.

#1 has been repaired causing the serial number to be lost, adding to confusion. Gibson claim it is a '59, others that it's a '58. The bridge pickup in that one has been replaced many times so your guess is as good as anyones as to what is in it if it is indeed the one we see at Madison Square Garden. This guitar was painstakingly copied by Gibson's Custom Art & Historic division in 2004, so they may be a source of info.

#2 is definitely a '59 and is the one with small switches under the pickguard to control different phase options on the pickups. I can't tell you what those pickups are, I'm afraid.

One of these two guitars was given Jimmy by Joe Walsh: controversy rages over which one.

That was all of only limited use, wasn't it? I saw Jimmy Page a couple of times from a distance at Ronnie Scott's Club in London in recent years. Go and hang out there long enough and you may meet him and be able to ask for more information. He may even know the answer to your question - or he may have forgotten.

One more thing: if you are chasing Page's sound you could always look at BareKnuckle's Black Dog pickup. There is a reason that pup carries that name, and that company is famous for its accurate research...:

Anyone round here want to talk about Fender guitars?

Cheers - C

That is true about the micro switches. That's why when Gibson put out the Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul they put those micro switches on there for endless pickup sounds.
