I have an american standard deluxe with the s-1 switch.. I got the guitar because of the bluesy sound that I got from the pickups.. I have just realized I hate how thin my bridge sound when played clean. I put a Hot Rails in the bridge but I really didn't like it.. I was thinking of getting a preloaded strat pick guard with an EMG humbucker and two EMG single coils.. Plus I mainly play metal and getting a metal tone out of a strat is too difficult. I kinduv want a les paul sound of pick up on my bridge while playing on clean.. I just don't like the thin sound of my Samarium Colbalt Noiseless pick up in the bridge.

So you are gonna ditch the entire S1 switching in favor a standard preloaded pickguard?

I dunno, man. I think I would find the pickup that works with your git, keeping the S1. Just my two cents, though...

Put a emg81/85 or even 60 in the bridge if you want the guitar just for metal. Emg's are useless for anything else, you cant get a remotely decent clean sound out of em. They sound nothing like the burstbuckers gibson use.

When i used my strat for extreme styles i chose a dimarzio FS2 it cleans up nicely and distorts great. Its not strat or les paul sounding, its thick and very focused with alot of attack, i found it perfect for thrash. Especialy if you boost the mids.
Ive got emg's in a metal guitar. they reign for metal distortion, but you cant get a convincing sound for anything else.

That was my first thought. Maybe some Lace Sensors? Or trade in that Deluxe for an Am Std. Even better, get an EJ.

Certainly nothing wrong with having a Les Paul in the stable. I have been an LP man for a while, and just bought my first Strat yesterday.
If you would like some assistance in this area, give me a PM.

dont lose the s1. cant you wire the new pickups to it. i know its like spaghetti junction and you may end up with some position's that dont work but you will get the 2 or 3 everybody needs and a few more to boot.

I'd want to think about the rest of your rig, too. I stood in front of Jeff Beck two or three years ago, and he was getting skull crushingly heavy sounds from his single-coil loaded Strat. Of course, that's via whatever FX he uses and a pair of Marshall half-stacks (sorry, can't remember the heads off hand).

What you do with the signal after it leaves the guitar is a big, big part of it.

Cheers - C

FS2's are humbuckers, as are scn's in the strict sense of humbuckers.
2 magnets side on polarity matched.

seriously it sounds like you want a FS2. try a 57hotrod out its got a tonezone in the bridge and sounds quite similar but with way less focus and bite than the fs2.
Ive heard good things about the new seymour duncan active pickups (livewires i think their called) that they respond well to clean or dirty amps.

How come the scn sounds thin. ive got em in my hotrod mid and neck they sound thick almost paf like, could yours be too low maybe. Have you tried wiring the mid tone pot to the bridge pickup? i found that helps alot in the bridge position and would recommend it for whatever humbucker you install too.

all the best with this minefield mate. Try a guitar with the pickup your thinking of is probably the best thing you could do.

well I play through a Line6 flextone 2. I do understand that the guitar is not totally responsible for the tone. So maybe I need to quit watching Gibson les paul vidoes and stick with my strat... It's a great guitar and I need to quit over analyzing..

flextones are great amps, but they are let down by their clean sounds. Truth of the sound imitation thing is, that your never going to get a amp to sound like a recorded amp without a eq in the effects loop no matter what guitar or amp you use. When you do eq it, if you try to record or gig with it, it will sound terrible and weak. On videos and cd's the soundtracks are mixed with the bass boosted and the mids cut. If you try and apply that to live use it sounds very weak.
All of that line6 stuffs cracking. i used a pod v2 and a cheap tranny power amp for live stuff quite a bit. The clean sound i found best on the amp was the jcm800 setting with the gain lowered and a bit of compression and reverb. The pods are based on the flextones if i remember right.
By all means put a bucker in your strat, im a huge fan of that sound, but even if you put a burstbucker in its not going to sound like a lespaul. It will sound great in its own right though. Go and try a few buckered strats get the names of the ones you like, come back here and tell us and we'll do our best to tell you which bucker it is. :D
