Reading specs? Isn't that like using directions? Just kidding. I'm really asking for a player's opinion since I didn't get to play both. I want to minimize my search as I don't have a lot of time. I realize it's all subjective, but this forum tends to be free with opinions. (Which is a good thing).

hi jagman heres my take. i own a few older models amstds
and i have played more than one new 2008 amstds i also own a few
2007 highway ones i like tone versatility the highwayone gives
me that and the new 2008 american standard does not.
sustain is also very important to me. the amstd is good in that
area but the highway one is even better. thats all i can say
test them youself you might feel the same way and you might
not. to me the 2007 highway ones are the go to strat.

Me I like the Standard but we all will have different thoughts but heres mine I like the feel of the rolled finger board and the truss rod they use in the standard make for a easy set up with the bi flex truss. To me it is just a little better guitar to play, Also the Std I think makes for great sustain which may be because the blocks are different.

Nice to read your thoughts on the HWY1s.

I own a '95 MIM Strat and while it is a nice guitar it's in need of repairs (new frets, new p-ups) which are gonna cost me some cash. I LOVE the 70's style headstock of the HWY1s and I've heard good things about the finish aswell.

However, it seems as though the frets are a bit of an issue and perhaps even the p-ups. I don't know. Seeing as I'm having a hard time finding someone to refret my MIM Strat I don't want crappy frets. I understand that a guitar needs some attention every now and then but...

I also own a Gibson SG worn/faded and I've had a few minor issues with it that required some pro work. What can I expect from a HWY1 Strat? I'd love it if Fender decided to make an AmStd with the 70's headstock, coz I'd probably buy one if they were available. I'm kinda sick of half-assed guitars but I can't afford the VOS/Signature/Blah Blah ones.

Thanks for the opinions on the two models. I definitely decided not to rush my decision. I might miss the BIG sale that's going on, but I'd rather get the right axe. It's amazing to hear some of the crap that certain big box store saleman spew. One guy told me that the Nitro finish was cheaper than poly and another guy told me what the S1 switch on a deluxe didn't do anything.

Heavy, don't worry about the pups on the Hwy1. Anything 2006 or newer has the upgraded Alnico 3's and they sound very good, in my opinion. I have not compared them to the 5's in the Standard yet. (see, I can read specs) Also, I don't think it takes much to get used to the jumbo frets. If you like the 70's headstock and a 3 color sunburst, I might have a minty one on the market shortly. Then again...I might just keep it.

Hrm...my birthday is coming up soon in October...maybe I can weasel my dad into gettin' me one instead of a halfstack...(which he doesn't know that I know these things...I'll probably also have to help pay for it lol). But hey, if a Highway 1 ages like a Gibson does, then heck yeah, I'll shoot for one.

You didn't hear it from me.

Happy Birthday in advance. The matte finish on mine has gotten a nice soft sheen to it from being played. The pick guard was always a little off white, but not quite cream. It looks better than when I bought it. I think it sounds better too, but that could be an illusion. It's a 2006 so I don't think it would have aged sonically that much that quickly. Maybe it's the new strings?
